5 CHAPTER FIVE

5.1 SYNTHESIS OF TRANSFER FUNCTION (TWO PORT NETWORK)

A transfer function is a function which relates the current or voltage at one port to the current or voltage
at another port. The open- circuit transfer impedances Z12 and Z21 were defined as:

And the voltage ratio transfer function is given as:

in terms of the short circuit parameters, the voltage ratio is :

, when the network is terminated is terminated at port two by resistor R, the transfer
impedance of the overall network is

The transfer admittance of the overall structure

Where G = 1/R. when both ports are terminated in resistors, the voltage – ratio
transfer function V2/V1 is

Properties which apply to all transfer function of passive linear network with
lumped elements,
1. T(s) is real for real s. this property is satisfied when T(s) is a rational function with real
coefficients.
2. T(s) has poles in the righet half plane and no multiple pole on the jw axis. If T(s) is given
as P(s)/Q(s), the degree of P(s) cannot exceed the degree of Q(s) by more than unity. Q(s)
must be hurwitz.

3. Suppose P(s) and Q(s) are given in terms of even and odd parts, that is

if arg T(j0) = 0 , the phase response is

an odd function in w.

The poles of Z21(s) and Y21(s) are also the poles of Z11, Z22 and Y11, Y22 respectively but not
the reverse.
5.2 Zero of transimission
It is a zero of a transfer function, at a zero of transmission, there is zero output for an input of the same
frequency.

Zero transmission occur at s = 0, b/c capacitor is open circuit at s = 0.

Zero transmission at s =j/±√𝐿𝐶.

Zero transmission at s = -1/RC.

In general all the transfer function of a given network has the same zeros of transmission, except in
certain cases. For example if Z12(s) has a zero of transmission at s = s1, than Y12(s), V2(s)/V1(s), etc.
will also have a zero at s = s1. We can check it by its relation. Example

and the voltage and current ratio transfer function can be expressed in terms of the Z and Y parameters
as
.

5.3 Synthesis of Y21 and Z21 with A 1-Ω termination
The synthesis of an L-C ladder network with a 1- Ω resistive termination to meet specified transfer
impedance or transfer admittance Y21.

Example 5.1

It is in ascending order
of both numerator and
denominator

Example 5.2

synthesis with foster II 1/Z(s) = Y(s)
Y(s) = 3s^2 +2/s(s^2 + 4) = A/s + (Bs + C)/s^2 +4
= 1/2s + 2.5s/(s^2 + 4)
Example 5.3 2.5s/(s^2 + 4) =1/Ls/(s^2 + 1/LC)

= 1/Ls + Cs , z(s) = 1/Cs/(s^2 +1/LC)
