Abstract

This research proposal aims to investigate the impact of online gaming

addiction on the physical fitness of students at MSU. The study will use a cross-

sectional quantitative research design and collect data using surveys and physical

fitness tests. The research will focus on exploring the relationships between online

gaming addiction and physical health, mental health, academic performance, social

relationships, and overall well-being. The study will also use standardized

questionnaires to assess these factors. The research findings will contribute to the

understanding of the negative effects of online gaming addiction and inform the

development of prevention and intervention strategies for addressing this issue.

Ultimately, the results of this study could provide important insights for policymakers,

educators, parents, and mental health professionals in promoting the healthy use of

technology and reducing the harmful consequences of online gaming addiction.

Introduction
Background of the Study

Online gaming has become a popular leisure activity among young people,

with millions of individuals around the world engaging in online gaming every day

( (Kuss et al,., 2016). While online gaming can be a fun and engaging way to

socialize and unwind, excessive and uncontrolled gaming can lead to addiction and

negative consequences. Online gaming addiction is a growing public health concern,

as it can impact individuals' physical and mental health, academic performance, and

social relationships (Kardefelt-Winther). The negative consequences of online

gaming addiction can be especially concerning for college students, who are at a

critical developmental stage and face academic and social pressures ( (Kuss et al,.,

2016)).

Rationale

The purpose of this research proposal is to investigate the impact of online

gaming addiction on the physical fitness of students at MSU. This study is significant

as physical fitness is an essential aspect of overall health and well-being. There is a

growing concern that excessive online gaming may lead to a sedentary lifestyle and

poor physical health outcomes, such as obesity, musculoskeletal disorders, and

reduced fitness levels (Kuss et al,., 2016). However, the literature on the impact of

online gaming addiction on physical fitness among college students is limited, and

more research is needed to understand the extent of the problem and inform

prevention and intervention strategies (Ko et al., 2016).

This research proposal aims to address this gap in the literature by using a cross-

sectional quantitative research design to explore the relationship between online

gaming addiction and physical fitness among MSU students. The study will provide

important insights into the negative consequences of online gaming addiction and

inform the development of prevention and intervention strategies for addressing this

issue. Ultimately, the research findings could contribute to promoting healthy

technology use and reducing the harmful consequences of online gaming addiction

among college students.

Objectives of the Study

The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of online gaming

addiction on the physical fitness of students in MSU. The study will specifically focus

on the impact of online gaming addiction on the students' physical health and well-

being. The study will also explore the factors that contribute to the development of

online gaming addiction among students in MSU, such as the amount of time spent

on gaming, the type of games played, and the students' motivations for playing

games.

Moreover, this study aims to provide insights on how online gaming addiction

affects students' academic performance, social relationships, and overall well-being.

By identifying the negative effects of online gaming addiction on students, the study

will provide valuable information for educators, parents, and policy makers to

develop interventions and policies to prevent and address online gaming addiction

among students in MSU. Ultimately, the study seeks to promote a healthier and more

balanced lifestyle among students, which can lead to better academic performance

and overall well-being.

Literature Review

Online gaming has become increasingly popular among students, leading to a rise in

the incidence of online gaming addiction. Online gaming addiction is defined as the

excessive use of online games that interferes with one's daily life and leads to negative

consequences, such as physical and mental health problems, academic difficulties, and

social isolation ( (Kuss et al,., 2016)). According to the National Survey on Drug Use and

Health, 8.5% of adolescents aged 12 to 17 have experienced problems related to video

game use ( (SAMHSA, 2017)The prevalence of online gaming addiction among college

students is estimated to be between 7.9% and 9.9% (Choi et al., 2017); (Kim et al.,, 2016)

Several studies have found that online gaming addiction has a negative impact on

students' physical health. (Kim et al.,, 2016)) found that students who played online

games for more than five hours per day had a higher risk of obesity, musculoskeletal

disorders, and sleep problems compared to those who played less than five hours

per day. Moreover, students who played violent online games were more likely to

experience physical aggression and injuries (Ferguson et al., 2012). These findings

suggest that online gaming addiction can have detrimental effects on students'

physical health and well-being.

Online gaming addiction has also been associated with poor mental health

outcomes, such as anxiety, depression, and social phobia. A study by (Li,

2017)found that students who were addicted to online games had higher levels of

anxiety and depression than non-addicted students. Similarly, (Kuss et al,., 2016)

5
Republic of the Philippines
Mindanao State University- Main Campus

found that online gaming addiction was associated with increased social anxiety and

reduced self-esteem. These findings suggest that online gaming addiction can have

negative effects on students' mental health and well-being.

In terms of academic performance, studies have found that online gaming

addiction can lead to poor academic outcomes, such as lower grades and reduced

academic motivation (Kim et al.,, 2016). Online gaming addiction can also interfere

with students' ability to concentrate and complete homework assignments ( (Chiu,

2004). Additionally, online gaming addiction can lead to absenteeism and truancy,

which can further negatively impact students' academic performance (Kim et al.,,

2016)

Online gaming addiction can also have negative effects on students' social

relationships. A study by Kim et al. (2018) found that online gaming addiction was

associated with reduced social support and increased loneliness. Moreover, students

who were addicted to online gaming were less likely to engage in social activities

and had poorer interpersonal relationships (Peng & Li, 2017). These findings

suggest that online gaming addiction can lead to social isolation and loneliness,

which can further exacerbate negative outcomes.

Taking all into account, the literature suggests that online gaming addiction

has negative effects on students' physical health, mental health, academic

performance, and social relationships. Therefore, it is important to understand the

factors that contribute to the development of online gaming addiction and to develop

interventions and policies to prevent and address online gaming addiction among

students.

Significance of the Study

The significance of this study for the students of MSU is that it will provide insights

into the effects of online gaming addiction on their physical and mental health, academic

performance, and social relationships. With the increasing prevalence of online gaming

addiction among students, this study can help raise awareness about the risks and negative

consequences associated with excessive gaming. By identifying the factors that contribute to

the development of online gaming addiction, the study can also help MSU students and

policymakers develop effective interventions and policies to prevent and address this issue.

Furthermore, this study can provide specific recommendations for MSU

students to manage their online gaming habits and balance them with their academic

and social responsibilities. The findings of this study can also serve as a basis for

further research on the topic and contribute to the development of evidence-based

interventions and policies for online gaming addiction among students.

In general, this study is significant for MSU students as it can help improve

their well-being and academic performance by addressing the negative impacts of

online gaming addiction. By providing insights and recommendations for students,

policymakers, and educators, this study can contribute to creating a healthier and

more supportive environment for students to thrive in their academic and personal

pursuits.

Research Methodology

The research methodology for this study will involve a cross-sectional survey

design. The target population will be MSU students who are currently enrolled in the

university. The sample size will be determined using the appropriate statistical

techniques to ensure representativeness and generalizability of the findings.

The data collection method will be through the use of a self-administered

questionnaire. The questionnaire will consist of questions that assess the students'

online gaming habits, online gaming addiction, physical health, mental health,

academic performance, and social relationships. The questionnaire will be

distributed to the participants via an online platform such as Google Forms.

The collected data will be analyzed using appropriate statistical techniques,

such as descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. The statistical software

package SPSS will be used for data analysis. The results will be presented using

tables, graphs, and charts. The research findings will be used to draw conclusions

and make recommendations for interventions and policies to address online gaming

addiction among MSU students.
