Animals and their Young

Circle Time 1
Activity Title: ZOO, A HUB FOR ANIMALS
Materials: template of a zoo, coloring materials
Objective/s:
 Distinguish the habitats of common animals in the environment.
 Sound off, identify, and write letter Zz.
Procedure:
1. Distribute a template of a zoo to each learner. Let the class tell something about the template.
2. Learners will color the template of their own choice of colors.

Activity Title: THE SHARK FAMILY


Materials: teacher-made backdrop of ocean, finger puppet of shark family
Objective/s:
 Distinguish the habitats of common animals in the environment.
Procedure:
1. Present to the class the materials needed for finger play. Talk about the things they see – color and sizes of each improvised shark, sea creatures on the
ocean, etc.
2. Once the learners are comfortable, ask them to sing the “The Shark Family”. Repeat at least twice if necessary.
3. The teacher will process the learning through motive questions.

Activity Title: ANIMAL MURAL


Materials: tarp of animal habitats (land, water, air), picture cards of different animals
Objective/s:
 Distinguish the habitats of common animals in the environment.
Procedure:
1. Show the materials to be used like tarp of land, water and air habitat and picture cards.
2. Let the learners identify the different animals and after distribute each card to the learners
3. The learners will sort the animals according to their habitat by putting each animal on the tarp accordingly.
4. Ask the learners to the animals in each habitat.

Activity Title: MOTHER AND BABY


Materials: picture cards of animals and their young
Objective/s:
 Recognize animals and their young.
 Share experiences and ideas about animals.
Procedure:
1. The teacher will prepare sets of pictures of animals and their babies.
2. The class will name all the animals first before engaging in the activity and be divided into three groups.
3. Each group will play with the sets of cards given to them. All the members of the group will participate in unveiling the matching cards of the mother
and baby animals.
4. Once the three groups are done, let the learners name the animals and their young for retention and mastery of the day’s concept.

Activity Title: FIND MY MOTHER


Materials: big picture cards of animals and their young

Procedure:
1. The teacher will prepare big picture cards of animals and their young.
2. The class will be divided into two groups, one with mother animals and the other group with young animals.
3. Let the two groups roam around and look for their partners.
4. Once all are matched up, ask the partners to recognize the animal and its young they represent.

Assessment Instruction: The teacher measures the concept being taught through the active participation of the learners.

Circle Time 2
Activity Title: ZED, THE ZOOMING ZEBRA
Materials: coloring template of a zebra, black colored paper, black yarn or any string
Objective/s:
 Distinguish the habitats of common animals in the environment.
 Sound off, identify, and write letter Zz.
Procedure:
1. Show a template of a zebra. Ask the learners to name it and let them sound off the beginning letter.
2. Give them half sheet of black colored paper and ask them to rip it into strips.
3. The strips of paper will be pasted on the zebra’s body to make it realistic and strings of black yarn will serve as the zebra’s tail.
4. After the activity has been done, the title “Zed, the Zooming Zebra” will be emphasized for the mastery of the phonetic sound and letter name of Zz.

Activity Title: ZOO DIORAMA


Materials: indigenous materials, glue, clear tape, coloring materials, cut-out animals, play dough
Objective/s:
 Distinguish the habitats of common animals in the environment.
 Sound off, identify, and write letter Zz.
Procedure:
1. Distribute shoe boxes or any box of similar size for their diorama.
2. Brainstorm with them what can be seen in the zoo.
3. Using clay or play dough and other junk materials, have them recreate a zoo.

4. Cover the box with art or construction paper and draw the natural features of a zoo.
5. Have them set up their clay and junk models inside the box.
6. Ask learners to name the animals inside the box they recreated.

Activity Title: LACING LETTERS


Materials: uppercase and lowercase Zz cards, shoelace or yarn
Objective/s:
 Sound off, identify, and write letter Zz.
Procedure:
1. Show the letter cards to the learners and let them produce its phonological sound.
2. Ask the learners to give the letter name of Zz and ask them to name some objects or words that begin with the said letter.
3. Model on how to do the lacing activity with letters. Make sure to follow the proper strokes of writing letter Zz.
4. Let them do the lacing activity on their own.
5. Once the learners are familiar and comfortable with the strokes of the letter Zz, give them their writing board and ask them to write the uppercase and
lowercase Zz several times.
Assessment Instruction: Monitor learners’ progress in letter-sound recognition and in writing letter Zz properly.

Activity Title: TEN LITTLE MONKEYS


Materials: cut-out monkeys with printed numbers (random numbers from 1 to 10), picture of bananas
Objective/s:
 Familiarize with numbers 1 to 10 and perform one-to-one correspondence.
Procedure:
1. Let the learners sing “Tayo ay Magbilang”
as a transition song before proceeding to the next activity.

2. After singing the transition song, present the materials to be used in the activity.
3. Call two participants and ask them to look for number 10 on the monkeys. Then let them count ten bananas and write number 10 on the board.
4. Whoever finish the procedure will get the point. The activity will be done once everybody has participated.
5. Simple token will be given to the winning participants.

Activity Title: ROLL A DIE


Materials: uppercase and lowercase Zz cards, shoelace or yarn
Objective/s:
 Sound off, identify, and write letter Zz.
Procedure:
1. Call on a learner to roll the die.
2. Let him/her count the dot pattern on top of the die. Then, let him/her pick the corresponding number card.
3. If correct, the learner may choose the next player.
Assessment Instruction: Monitor the progress of learners in terms of numeracy skills.

Indoor/Outdoor Play
Activity Title: POP THE BALLOON
Materials: balloon, numbers on paper, different animal cards, board, marker
Objective/s:
 Familiarize with numbers 1 to 10 and perform one-to-one correspondence.
Procedure:
1. The class will be grouped into two.
2. Ask among the members of the group would want to be the facilitator of the game (preferable someone who already develops his/her numeracy
skills).
3. Prepare the balloons on a big space in the classroom.
4. Ask the facilitator to start the popping of balloon and search for number 10 on the paper.
5. If the player gets it, s/he needs to skip on ten animals on the floor then write number 10 on the board.
6. The group that finishes first will be declared as winner and will be given simple tokens.

Activity Title: JUMPING ON NUMBERS
Materials: floor cards of different numbers
Objective/s:
 Familiarize with numbers 1 to 10 and perform one-to-one correspondence.
Procedure:
1. Show the number cards to the learners. Let them identify each number and then shuffle it to start the game.
2. Pick a card and let the player identify it. You may ask him/her to show the number in his/her fingers while saying it loud.
3. The player then jumps on the corresponding number on the floor.
4. For an extension activity, you may ask him/her to imitate an animal movement according to the shown number. For instance, “Hop like a kangaroo,
four times.”

Assessment Instruction: The teacher has to check if the learners respond correctly as they engage into locomotor activities.
