P11: Sliding gate control with button interlock

Control requirements

An existing hinged gate to some factory premises is to be replaced by an electrically

operated sliding gate. The drive motor therefore needs to move the gate in both
directions and therefore needs to have a suitable control system. Plan and implement a
circuit for this.

The drive motor should turn clockwise or anti-clockwise as required in order to open or
close the gate. Three buttons are available to handle this. In order to eliminate hazards,
the two possible directions for the motor must be suitably interlocked.

Button 1 opens the gate (turning clockwise).

Button 2 closes the gate (turning anti-clockwise).

Button 3 always stops the gate and turns off the motor.

The direction can only be changed after the gate has stopped in the interim.

Use button and contactor interlocking to interlock the two directions.

Equipment Function
Button STOP gate (OFF)
Button Turn on to open gate (clockwise)
Button Turn on to close gate (anti-clockwise)
Motor protection switch Overload protection for drive motor
Contactor Power contactor to turn the drive motor clockwise
Contactor Power contactor to turn the drive motor anti-clockwise

Planning

Develop, try out and test a control circuit using the circuit simulator. Print out the results
when you are finished.

Match the components to the names they should be identified with in this project.
Button to stop gate (OFF) ???

Button to open gate (clockwise) ???

Button to close gate (anti-clockwise) ???

Power contactor to turn the drive motor anti- ???

clockwise

 Start the simulation by clicking the button.

Procedure

Now implement the complete circuit on the experiment board and undertake a practical
test of your results.

 Place overlay 11 (SO4203-4N11) on the experiment board.

 Compare your solution with the components available for implementing

the control circuit on the experiment board.
 Check if there are any differences between your solution and the given
one and modify your circuit if necessary.
 Implement your solution as the control circuit on the experiment board.
 Also assemble a main circuit in accordance with the following circuit
diagram:
 Turn on the virtual instrument for the 3 x 14 V, 50 Hz three-phase power
supply.
 Try out the circuit as a whole.

 Turn off the three-phase power supply virtual instrument.
