CE3166 Structural Steel Design and System
Semester 1, AY2016/2017
Tutorial Foreword
Dear students, welcome to CE3166 tutorials. We hope to improve the teaching style of the
tutorials such that the lessons are more interactive and better catered to your pace of learning.
For each tutorial, the questions will be uploaded one week in advance with partial worked
solutions to get you started. You are strongly recommended to try them out together with
your group mates before attending the class.
When attending the tutorial sessions, please be seated in your groups (one group per table).
Tutorials will begin with a short overview of the topic and then groups will be asked to
present their solutions where no partial worked solutions have been provided. For example
using Tutorial 1, worked solution is provided to question part (a) and groups will be asked to
present their solutions to part (b) and (c).
Once the answers have been presented promptly by the groups, this will give us time to
discuss more complex/interesting problems. Time permitting, selected difficult questions
from the Assignment practice set will be discussed. Hence, it is important to try out the
questions before hand so that the tutorial time can be well spent.
Based on the class interaction, we will be able to tailor the tutorials accordingly. Your
feedback is greatly appreciated as it will help us to improve the tutorials along the way
throughout the semester. See you all at the first tutorial class!

Tutorial 1 – LOAD COMBINATIONS
Question 1
Figure Q1 shows a simple crane on top of a high rise building. The crane is used to lift a
gondola so that workers can clean the windows. The boom of the crane is 9 m long and
simply-supported at two points with an overhang over the edge of the building. The self-
weight of the boom 25 kN/m and is designed for a distributed imposed load of 40 kN/m. The
lifting machinery and counter mass have a combined self-weight of 100 kN. The gondola is
attached to the crane only during cleaning season and together with the worker have a
combined occupancy load of 300 kN. (Horizontal internal forces in the boom due to the
lifting cable may be ignored.)

RA RB
Unfavorable – maximizes load effect.
Favorable – minimizes load effect.
Use equilibrium of moments about B to calculate RA:
RA×6 + 1.0×(25×3)×1.5 + 0×(40×3)×1.5 + 0×300×3
= 1.35×(25×6)×3 + 1.5×(40×6)×3 + 1.35×100×3
RA = 330 kN.
(ii) Find maximum uplift on support A.

RA = -170 kN.
