7: Optimization Problems
Steps
1) Draw a diagram and introduce variables
2) Identify the “target variable”
3) Relate the variables
4) Eliminate all but one independent variable, so target is a function of
independent variable
5) Find Domain
6) Use Calculus

Example 1:
We have 100 meters of fence material and want to enclose a rectangle area
with one side against the wall. The interior is evenly divided into two
divisions by putting a fence parallel to the sides perpendicular to the wall.
What is the largest area we can enclose?

1) A=xy
2) 100 metres =3 x+ y
y=100−3 x
Sub (2) into (1)
100
A=x ( 100−3 x ) 0 ≤ x ≤

A ( x )=0 , so A ( x )=100−6 x=0 ⇒ x=

Example 2
Find the maximum area of a rectangle inscribed inside a circle of radius R.

A=(length)(breadth)
2 2 2
x + y =( 2 R ) →(2)

A=xy →(1)

( 2 ) : y=√ ( 2 R ) −x 2

Sub (2) into (1)

A=x √ 4 R 2−x 2
Domain: 0 ≤ x ≤ 2 R

Critical points (when x ϵ (0 , 2 R))

A ( x )=0

A ( x )= =0
√ 4 R2−x 2
x=R √ 2

y=R √ 2
