Sub: Heat wave & Hot-humid weather conditions likely over the districts of Odisha
Current Weather:
Due to prevailing dry conditions in the state and strengthening of northwesterly dry winds in middle
& upper level of the atmosphere, maximum temperature (Day Temperature) likely to be above
normal by 3-5°C at many places over the districts of interior Odisha during next 2 days Consequently
maximum temperature (Day Temperature) likely to be between 43 to 45°C at a few places over the
districts of interior Odisha with isolated heat wave likely conditions over some districts of Odisha
during next 3 days. Also due to absence of any major synoptic situation and presence of high
humidity in lower level, hot & humid conditions very likely over coastal Odisha during next 5 days.
However establishment of a north-south trough like features from 2nd June, 2024 onwards likely to
trigger thunderstorms activity from 2nd June, 2024 onwards over some districts of coastal and
adjoining districts of Odisha. People are advised to take precautionary measure while going
outside during the peak hours of the day time between 1100 Hrs IST-1500 Hrs IST during next
3days.

Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Jajpur,
(5th – 6th June 2024)
Dhenkanal, Khordha, Nayagarh, Puri, Ganjam, Keonjhar &
Gajapati.
Impact:
1.Heat is health concern for general public exposed to it and vulnerable people (viz: infant, elderly, pregnant women
and sick people).
2.It is advised to take precautionary measures for hot weather while going outside during peak hours of the day (around
1100 IST-1500 IST).
3. Heat cramp, heat rash likely during peak hours of the day between 1100 IST-1500 IST
Action Suggested:
1. Avoid prolonged heat exposure.
2. Wear light weight, light colored, loose, cotton clothes.
3. Cover your head: use a wet cloth, hat or umbrella while going out during peak hours.
4. Drink sufficient water even if not feeling thirsty to avoid dehydration.
5. Use ORS, homemade drinks like lassi, torani (rice water), sugarcane juice, lemon water, buttermilk, etc. to re-hydrate
the body.
6. Caution workers to avoid direct sunlight during the peak hours.
7. Schedule strenuous jobs to cooler times of the day.
8. Increasing the frequency and length of rest breaks for outdoor activities.
9. Pregnant workers and workers with a medical condition should be given additional attention.
10. Recognize the signs of heat stroke, heat rash or heat cramps such as weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea, sweating
and seizures. If you feel faint or ill, see a doctor/ hospital immediately.
11.Farmers are advised to continue irrigation activities in sugarcane, summer maize, pulses and other crop and vegetables.
12. Avoid alcohol, tea, coffee and carbonated soft drinks, which dehydrates the body and avoid high-protein food
and do not eat stale food.
13.Do not leave children or pets in parked vehicles
14.Election rallies/ gatherings need to be judiciously monitored during peak hours of the day (11am to 3pm), Also
people going for rallies/ gatherings advised to take necessary precautions to avoid prolonged exposure in high
humid & temperature areas.
15.Keep live-stocks in cool & shade place and arrange drinking water for them.
