CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION OF SIWES
1.1 DEFINITION OF SIWES
The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a structured and
mandatory program integrated into the academic curriculum of higher education
institutions in Nigeria. Initiated by the Nigerian government, SIWES aims to
bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom and
practical skills required in the professional world.
5
SIWES typically spans a period of six months to one year, depending on the
specific academic discipline. It is applicable to various fields such as engineering,
sciences, technology, and social sciences. The primary objective of SIWES is to
expose students to the practical aspects of their chosen fields, fostering a seamless
transition from academia to the workplace.
SIWES offers several benefits to students. It provides them with the opportunity to
apply theoretical knowledge acquired during their academic studies to real-world
scenarios. This practical exposure enhances their problem-solving skills, critical
thinking abilities, and overall competency in their chosen field. Additionally,
students develop a better understanding of industry operations and professional
ethics, preparing them for a smooth transition into the workforce upon graduation.
The program also benefits industries by allowing them to identify and nurture
potential talents early in their academic journey. Industries serve as training
grounds for students, providing a platform for them to work on real projects,
interact with professionals, and gain insights into the practical challenges of their
respective fields. This collaboration fosters a symbiotic relationship between
academia and industry, promoting the exchange of knowledge and the
development of skilled professionals.
6
Furthermore, SIWES contributes to national development by producing a
workforce that is not only academically qualified but also equipped with practical
skills essential for economic growth. The program aligns with the government's
commitment to producing a competent and globally competitive workforce,
ultimately contributing to the nation's technological advancement and
industrialization.
7
Throughout its history, SIWES has undergone several transformations and
improvements to align with the evolving needs of the workforce. The program has
adapted to technological advancements, incorporating digital skills and innovations
relevant to contemporary industries. This adaptability ensures that students gain
exposure to current industry practices, making them more competitive in the job
market.
SIWES was established by ITF (Industrial Training Funds) in the year 1973 to
solve the problem of lack of adequate proper skills for employment of tertiary
institution graduates by Nigerian Industries. The Students’ Industrial Work
Experience Scheme (SIWES) was founded to be a skill training program to help
expose and prepare students of universities, polytechnics and colleges of education
for the industrial work situation to be met after graduation.
This scheme serves as a smooth transition from the classroom to the world of work
and further helps in the application of knowledge. The scheme provides students
with the opportunity of acquainting and exposing themselves to the experience
required in handling and managing of equipment and machinery that are usually
not made available in their institutions.
Before this scheme was established, there was a growing concern and trend noticed
by industrialists, that graduates of higher institutions lacked sufficient practical
background for employment; as a result, they could not easily find jobs due to the
lack of working experience. Therefore, the employers thought that theoretical
education going on in higher institutions was not responsive to the needs of the
employers of labor.
8
This was a huge problem for thousands of Nigerians until 1973. It was against this
background that the fundamental reason for initiating and designing the scheme by
the fund in 1973/74 was introduced.
The ITF organization (Industrial Training Fund) made a decision to help all
interested Nigerian students and established the SIWES program. It was officially
approved and presented by the Federal Government in 1974. The scheme was
solely funded by the ITF during its formative years but as the financial
involvement became unbearable to the fund, it withdrew from the scheme in 1978.
In 1979, the federal government handed over the management of the scheme to
both the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the National Board for
Technical Education (NBTE).
Later, in November 1984, the federal government reversed the management and
implementation of the scheme to ITF. In July 1985, it was taken over by the
Industrial Training Fund (ITF) while the funding was solely borne by the federal
government.
5. Introduce students to real work atmosphere so that they know what they will
likely face when they graduate.
The duration is for four months and one year for polytechnics and colleges
of education students respectively and six months for university students.
11
Lack of Integration with Academic Curriculum: The need for better integration
of SIWES experiences with academic coursework to enhance the relevance and
applicability of the practical knowledge gained (Ajayi & Olusakin, 2016).
Inadequate Facilities and Equipment: Some industries may lack the necessary
facilities and modern equipment, impacting the students' exposure to current
technologies and practices (Okoro & Onu, 2015).
Time Constraints: The limited duration of SIWES may restrict students from
gaining in-depth insights into complex industrial processes and projects (Ekwugha
& Okafor, 2018).

CHAPTER FOUR
DETAILS OF WORK EXPERIENCE
4.1 PERSONAL WORK EXPERIENCE WITH Chicwoman.NG
During my industral training i decided to learn a skill that is not only innovative in
nature but also add value to the society known as fashion designing. Due to the
mass production i was asigned to the production department where i and other
workers join or stitch together already cut fabric to give it the shape or look
demanded.
I was basically in the unit of those workers that was asigned for the production of
hoodies and joggers for final year students FYF wear. Also beading of dress like
bridal wears.
Hoodies
Joggers
Bridal wears
4.2.1 HOODIES

hoodie pattern, and a sewing machine.
2. Use a hoodie dress pattern or modify a hoodie and dress pattern.
3. Cut out pattern pieces, including front, back, sleeves, and hood.
5. Pin the pattern pieces onto the fabric and cut around them.
6. Begin with the shoulder seams, sewing the front and back pieces together.

16. Make any necessary adjustments, such as taking in or letting out seams.
Remember to follow the specific instructions provided with your pattern, and feel
free to get creative with fabric choices and design modifications
4.2.2 JOGGERS
4. Take Measurements: Measure your waist, hips, chest, and desired length for
the dress. Add a few inches for seam allowances.
5. Cut the front and back pieces of the dress, ensuring they match your
measurements. Cut sleeves if you want them.

sewing.
11. Hem the bottom of the dress to your desired length. You can also add cuffs
to the sleeves and bottom for a jogger style.
12.Trim any loose threads and make sure all seams are secure.
Remember to adjust these steps based on your specific design preferences and the
type of jogger dress you want to create. Feel free to customize with pockets,
drawstrings, or other details.
Bridal wear typically refers to clothing worn by brides on their wedding day. It
includes a wide range of styles, such as wedding gowns, veils, and accessories.
Bridal attire varies in design, color, and cultural significance, reflecting the
30
diversity of wedding traditions worldwide. Fabrics like silk, satin, and lace are
commonly used, and dresses often feature intricate detailing, embellishments, or
embroidery to enhance their elegance.
Creating a bridal dress involves several steps, and the process can be intricate. A
simplified overview are as follows:
4. Consider factors like height, bust, waist, hips, and desired dress length.
5. Choose high-quality fabrics based on the design, season, and the bride's
preferences. Common bridal fabrics include silk, satin, lace, and tulle.
7. Make a muslin prototype to test the fit before cutting into the actual fabric.
9. Assemble the dress, paying attention to details like seams, darts, and
embellishments.
10. Conduct multiple fitting sessions to ensure the dress fits perfectly.
31
11. Make adjustments as needed, considering the bride's comfort and
preferences.
12. Add embellishments like lace, beading, sequins, or embroidery based on the
design.
16. Ensure all details are impeccably finished for a polished look.
17. Have a final fitting with the bride to make any last-minute adjustments.
18. Ensure the dress drapes beautifully and is comfortable for the bride to wear.
20. Carefully package the dress for transportation or presentation to the bride.
21.Keep detailed records of the design, measurements, and any alterations made
during the process.
Remember, creating a bridal dress requires skill and attention to detail. If you're
not experienced, consider consulting or collaborating with a professional
seamstress or designer.
32
4.3 REASONS WHY I CHOSE TO LEARN FASHION DESIGNING AS A
SKILLS
4. Fashion designing communicate through their designs styles and also serve as a
sociatial influence .
5. To Work with people: Fashion desigers work with many people throughout
their workdays, whether it's clients, sewers, fellow fashion designers or other
33
creative professionals in the industry. They have interpersonal skills to interact
with others effectively.
Mastering some fashion techniques: Here most of their techniques are different
from other fashion techniques. Pattern of cutting and stiching fabric wa one major
challenge to me to master most of them.
Adapting to the working environment and workers: Been a new person and
also a beginner among them was not easy to get along with everyone knowing how
the factory runs took me alot of time until i adapted
Now I can say i learnt alot from the fashion factory but basically hoody wear
because it was on a massive demand from students.
34
4.5 MY CONTRIBUTION TO THE COMPANY
At first i was thinking i only learnt a pratical skill but i was surprise how my
contribution also helped the growth of the company. For instance, when i started i
noticed the distant relationship between the employer and the employees and the
tensure at the workplace which contributed to the lack of interest and personal zeal
to the work they were paid to perform, it was a huge influance to the factory when
i adopted the idea of cordial relationship between the two parties.
Break time and bonus for extra time. Ealier i said their work duration last till night,
which some work at night and others during the day time but some workers will
work extra time and still not receive any token for their time spent and most times
they work all day without break making some of them fall sick due to stress.Doing
job that required man power needs break and appreciation token for their time and
effort. I tried to initiate this because this is what makes workers happy while
carrying out their duties. In as much as every company makes research on what to
increase their demands and improve their customer sevices is also important to
handle their workers with care cause their the strength of the company who offers
their effect, intellectual thinking, time
35
