CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION OF SIWES
1.1 DEFINITION OF SIWES
The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a structured and
mandatory program integrated into the academic curriculum of higher education
institutions in Nigeria. Initiated by the Nigerian government, SIWES aims to
bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom and
practical skills required in the professional world.

5
SIWES typically spans a period of six months to one year, depending on the
specific academic discipline. It is applicable to various fields such as engineering,
sciences, technology, and social sciences. The primary objective of SIWES is to
expose students to the practical aspects of their chosen fields, fostering a seamless
transition from academia to the workplace.

The program operates through collaboration between academic institutions,

industries, and the government. It is governed by guidelines set by the National
Universities Commission (NUC) and other relevant bodies. Students enrolled in
SIWES are required to undergo practical training in industries related to their field
of study, enabling them to gain hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of
industry practices.

SIWES offers several benefits to students. It provides them with the opportunity to
apply theoretical knowledge acquired during their academic studies to real-world
scenarios. This practical exposure enhances their problem-solving skills, critical
thinking abilities, and overall competency in their chosen field. Additionally,
students develop a better understanding of industry operations and professional
ethics, preparing them for a smooth transition into the workforce upon graduation.

The program also benefits industries by allowing them to identify and nurture
potential talents early in their academic journey. Industries serve as training
grounds for students, providing a platform for them to work on real projects,
interact with professionals, and gain insights into the practical challenges of their
respective fields. This collaboration fosters a symbiotic relationship between
academia and industry, promoting the exchange of knowledge and the
development of skilled professionals.

6
Furthermore, SIWES contributes to national development by producing a
workforce that is not only academically qualified but also equipped with practical
skills essential for economic growth. The program aligns with the government's
commitment to producing a competent and globally competitive workforce,
ultimately contributing to the nation's technological advancement and
industrialization.

The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a vital component of

the Nigerian higher education system. It serves as a bridge between academic
knowledge and practical skills, preparing students for successful integration into
the workforce. Through collaboration between academic institutions, industries,
and the government, SIWES plays a crucial role in shaping a skilled and competent
workforce, contributing to the overall development of the nation.

1.2 HISTORY OF SIWES

The Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a program designed
to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge gained in academic institutions
and practical skills required in the workplace.

SIWES encompasses a wide range of disciplines, including engineering, sciences,

technology, agriculture, environmental studies, and social sciences. The
participating institutions collaborate with industries to secure suitable placements
for the students. This collaboration not only benefits the students but also allows
industries to identify and nurture potential talents.

7
Throughout its history, SIWES has undergone several transformations and
improvements to align with the evolving needs of the workforce. The program has
adapted to technological advancements, incorporating digital skills and innovations
relevant to contemporary industries. This adaptability ensures that students gain
exposure to current industry practices, making them more competitive in the job
market.

SIWES was established by ITF (Industrial Training Funds) in the year 1973 to
solve the problem of lack of adequate proper skills for employment of tertiary
institution graduates by Nigerian Industries. The Students’ Industrial Work
Experience Scheme (SIWES) was founded to be a skill training program to help
expose and prepare students of universities, polytechnics and colleges of education
for the industrial work situation to be met after graduation.

This scheme serves as a smooth transition from the classroom to the world of work
and further helps in the application of knowledge. The scheme provides students
with the opportunity of acquainting and exposing themselves to the experience
required in handling and managing of equipment and machinery that are usually
not made available in their institutions.

Before this scheme was established, there was a growing concern and trend noticed
by industrialists, that graduates of higher institutions lacked sufficient practical
background for employment; as a result, they could not easily find jobs due to the
lack of working experience. Therefore, the employers thought that theoretical
education going on in higher institutions was not responsive to the needs of the
employers of labor.

8
This was a huge problem for thousands of Nigerians until 1973. It was against this
background that the fundamental reason for initiating and designing the scheme by
the fund in 1973/74 was introduced.

The ITF organization (Industrial Training Fund) made a decision to help all
interested Nigerian students and established the SIWES program. It was officially
approved and presented by the Federal Government in 1974. The scheme was
solely funded by the ITF during its formative years but as the financial
involvement became unbearable to the fund, it withdrew from the scheme in 1978.

In 1979, the federal government handed over the management of the scheme to
both the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the National Board for
Technical Education (NBTE).

Later, in November 1984, the federal government reversed the management and
implementation of the scheme to ITF. In July 1985, it was taken over by the
Industrial Training Fund (ITF) while the funding was solely borne by the federal
government.

1.3 SCOPE OF SIWES

The Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a program designed

to expose students to practical work experiences related to their field of study. It
typically includes hands-on training, skill development, and exposure to real-world
work environments. The scope of SIWES varies across disciplines, covering fields
such as engineering, science, technology, and management. It aims to bridge the
gap between theoretical knowledge gained in the classroom and practical
application in professional settings. The Students Industrial Work Experience
9
Scheme (SIWES) is a structured program in Nigeria that provides students in
higher education institutions with practical exposure to industry work
environments. It is designed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and
practical application, enhancing students' skills and preparing them for the
workforce. SIWES typically lasts for a specified duration, allowing students to
gain hands-on experience in their field of study. SIWES is strategized for skill. It is
in fact designed to prepare and expose students of universities, polytechnics and
colleges of education to the real-life work situation they would be engaged in after
graduation. Therefore, SIWES is a key factor required to inject and help keep alive
industrialization and economic development in the nation through the introduction
and practical teaching of scientific and technological skills to students.

1.3.1 Objectives Of the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme include:

1. Provide an avenue for students to acquire industrial skills for experience

during their course of study.
2. Expose students to work methods and techniques that may not be available
during their course of study.

3. Bridging the gap between theory and practice by providing a platform to

apply knowledge learnt in school to real work situations.

4. Enabling the easier and smoother transition from school by equipping

students with better contact for future work placement.

5. Introduce students to real work atmosphere so that they know what they will
likely face when they graduate.

1.4 IMPORTANCE OF SIWES

10
All Nigerian students who study technology and science must know about
SIWES. Partaking in SIWES has become a prerequisite for the award of diploma
and degree certificates in many Nigerian Institutions according to the Nigerian
government educational policy.

Undergraduate students of the following disciplines are expected to be a part

of the scheme: Natural sciences, Engineering and Technology, Education,
Agriculture, Medical Sciences, Environmental and pure and applied sciences.

The duration is for four months and one year for polytechnics and colleges
of education students respectively and six months for university students.

standardization (Oluwatayo, 2017).

11
Lack of Integration with Academic Curriculum: The need for better integration
of SIWES experiences with academic coursework to enhance the relevance and
applicability of the practical knowledge gained (Ajayi & Olusakin, 2016).

Insufficient Industry Relevance: Some SIWES placements may lack direct

relevance to students' fields of study, limiting the practical application of their
academic knowledge (Okoro & Onu, 2015).

Insufficient Industry Relevance: Some SIWES placements may lack direct

relevance to students' fields of study, limiting the practical application of their
academic knowledge (Okoro & Onu, 2015).

Inadequate Communication Channels: Limited communication between the

industry supervisors and academic institutions may hinder the feedback loop
essential for aligning the practical experiences with academic goals (Ekwugha &
Okafor, 2018).

Inadequate Facilities and Equipment: Some industries may lack the necessary
facilities and modern equipment, impacting the students' exposure to current
technologies and practices (Okoro & Onu, 2015).

Time Constraints: The limited duration of SIWES may restrict students from
gaining in-depth insights into complex industrial processes and projects (Ekwugha
& Okafor, 2018).

Gender Disparities: Gender-related challenges, such as limited opportunities for

female students in certain industries, may impact the overall inclusivity and
diversity of SIWES experiences (Ukpabi & Onyishi, 2016).

4.4 PROBLEMS ENCOUNTER AT CHICWOMAN.NG FASHION

FACTORY
Starting more than one project at a time: As a beginner i was so excited to get
started, I wanted to sew alot before the day runs down but always ending up not
completing any one, this became a problem till i realized my mistakes and decided
to work one at a time.

Getting a zipper to be perfect at a horizontal seam: This was one of the

essential problems that took my time, practicing to master a way to fix a zipper to
give you horizontal look without looking one sided.

Mastering some fashion techniques: Here most of their techniques are different
from other fashion techniques. Pattern of cutting and stiching fabric wa one major
challenge to me to master most of them.

Adapting to the working environment and workers: Been a new person and
also a beginner among them was not easy to get along with everyone knowing how
the factory runs took me alot of time until i adapted

Now I can say i learnt alot from the fashion factory but basically hoody wear
because it was on a massive demand from students.

34
4.5 MY CONTRIBUTION TO THE COMPANY

At first i was thinking i only learnt a pratical skill but i was surprise how my
contribution also helped the growth of the company. For instance, when i started i
noticed the distant relationship between the employer and the employees and the
tensure at the workplace which contributed to the lack of interest and personal zeal
to the work they were paid to perform, it was a huge influance to the factory when
i adopted the idea of cordial relationship between the two parties.

Break time and bonus for extra time. Ealier i said their work duration last till night,
which some work at night and others during the day time but some workers will
work extra time and still not receive any token for their time spent and most times
they work all day without break making some of them fall sick due to stress.Doing
job that required man power needs break and appreciation token for their time and
effort. I tried to initiate this because this is what makes workers happy while
carrying out their duties. In as much as every company makes research on what to
increase their demands and improve their customer sevices is also important to
handle their workers with care cause their the strength of the company who offers
their effect, intellectual thinking, time
