What is
Computer?
What is
Computer?
The word computer comes from the word
"compute", which means, to calculate"
Thereby, a computer is an electronic device that
can perform arithmetic operations at high speed
A computer is also called a data processor
because it can store, process, and retrive data
whenever desired
Data Processing
The activity of processing data using a computer called
data processing
Data
Capture Data
Manipulate Data
Output Result
Information
Data is raw material used as input and information is
prcessed data obtained as output of data processing
Characteristics of Computers
Automation Speed Accuracy Versatility
Memory Reliability Deligence No Feeling
Characteristics of Computers
AUTOMATION
Done without thinking or human interventions
Automation SPEED ACCURACY VERSATILITY MEMORY RELIABILITY DELIGENCE NO FEELING
Characteristics of Computers
SPEED
A very fast device | Perform Operation with high speed
Automation SPEED ACCURACY VERSATILITY MEMORY RELIABILITY DELIGENCE NO FEELING
Characteristics of Computers
ACCURACY
Computer is basically made for two reasons
Speed and Accuracy
Automation SPEED ACCURACY VERSATILITY MEMORY RELIABILITY DELIGENCE NO FEELING
Characteristics of Computers
VERSATILITY
Capability of a computer to perform different kinds of works
with same accuracy and efficiency.
Automation SPEED ACCURACY VERSATILITY MEMORY RELIABILITY DELIGENCE NO FEELING
Characteristics of Computers
MEMORY
built-in memory called primary memory where it stores data. Secondary
storage are removable devices such as CDs, pen drives, etc., which are
also used to store data.
Automation SPEED ACCURACY VERSATILITY MEMORY RELIABILITY DELIGENCE NO FEELING
Characteristics of Computers
RELIABILITY
A computer is reliable as it gives consistent result for similar set of
data i.e., if we give same set of input any number of times, we will get
the same result.
Automation SPEED ACCURACY VERSATILITY MEMORY RELIABILITY DELIGENCE NO FEELING
Characteristics of Computers
DELIGENCE
A computer can perform millions of tasks or calculations with the same
consistency and accuracy. It doesn’t feel any fatigue or lack of
concentration. Its memory also makes it superior to that of human beings.
Automation SPEED ACCURACY VERSATILITY MEMORY RELIABILITY DELIGENCE NO FEELING
Characteristics of Computers
NO FEELING
Computer is a machine due to which it is lacking emotions and feelings
Automation SPEED ACCURACY VERSATILITY MEMORY RELIABILITY DELIGENCE NO FEELING
Evolution of Computer System
People were searching for fast and accurate calculating device, as
a result came into being. There are several researchers and
scientists who played a key role in the evolution of computer
systems.
First mechanical adding machine was invented by Blaise Pascal in
1642
Baron Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz of Germany invented the first
calculator for multiplication in 1671
Keyboard machines originated in the United States around 1880.
Charles Babbage is considered to be the father of modern digital
computers
Some well known Early Computers
The Mark I Computer (1937-44)
The Atanasoff-Berry Computer (1939-42)
The ENIAC (1943-46)
The EDVAC (1946-52)
The EDSAC (1947-49)
Manchester Mark I (1948)
The Univac I (1951)
Limitation of Computer Systems
The computer is not a perfect machine. Thus, it has its own limitations, like
the following:
The computer can only do what you tell it to do.
It cannot generate information on its own.
The computer will give you wrong information if you feed it wrong data
The computer cannot correct wrong instruction
Depends on user
Capabilities of Computer System
We see computer everywhere
at Home in School in the Hospital in the Bank
in bookstores department at recreation in other
stores activities places
