Reports vs. Dashboards
Dashboards are named after automobile dashboards - and they have some similarities too!

Summary
Here is a quick recap:
• A dashboard is often a graphical representation of important data or information that is presented
in a single, user-friendly view.
• Key Performance Indicator (KPI) is a metric that demonstrates progress toward a goal.
• Reports are typically static documents presented in a structured format, such as Word documents,
whereas Dashboards are interactive, visual displays of data that are typically web-based which
provide a real-time view of key performance indicators.

Gauge Plot

Note: Python does not have an inherent function

to create a gauge plot, but it can be done by
creatively using a pie chart and a circle (to make
the pie chart look like a donut chart) and then
adding text inside the donut chart.

Traffic Lights

Why is it a problem to have a long list of single traffic light indicators like this?
sainathgunda99@gmail.com
DLZNK464L9

• Traffic lights have meaning when your little circles are

very clearly traffic lights.

• This can require context (like the stoplight wrapper

image).

• Or, it can be provided if all three colors are present.

What is the biggest problem with all above three of these Dashboard Indicators?

• Dashboard indicators are meant to represent current or ongoing conditions.

• If your car's speedometer told you that yesterday you were parked instead of
your current, ongoing speed - you'd assume the car was broken.

Indicator Plots
Q.) The plots on the left are all, for one reason
or another, bad uses of gauge plots. Why do I
say that?

Ans.) They have more than one color in the

gauge – which makes it confusing as to what
sainathgunda99@gmail.com they are supposed to read as the gauge. Also,
DLZNK464L9
bending multiple bars requires reading an
angle, not a length. No concentric rings!

Summaries and Icons
• KPIs often boil down to single data

• Sometimes, you just need the

Summary
Here is a quick recap:
• Creating unique dashboard visualizations can help make your data more engaging and easier to understand.
• A gauge plot is a type of data visualization that resembles the face of a traditional analog gauge or speedometer
and is used to display a single value or metric within a predefined range.
• Speedometers can be used to represent Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) like sales targets or production
efficiency. The needle's position on the speedometer visually communicates whether the metric is above,
below, or on target.
• Battery icons or visuals are often used in data visualization to represent the level of a particular attribute or
sainathgunda99@gmail.com
DLZNK464L9
resource, and Traffic lights, with their red, yellow, and green colors, are a familiar way to convey status and
alerts.
• Indicator plots are concise data visualizations that display a single metric or KPI relative to a benchmark. They
provide a clear and intuitive representation of performance status.
• Icons serve as direct depictions of objects or concepts, embodying a visual metaphor. Glyphs typically consist of
typographical characters and don't directly represent objects. Symbols, akin to icons,
can convey direct or indirect meanings, often taking a figurative form.
• Markers are elements designed to draw attention to or prompt human interaction.
