First Reading

A reading from the book of the prophet Joel

Let your hearts be broken, and not your garments torn.

Even now, says the Lord,

return to me with your whole heart,
with fasting, and weeping, and mourning;
Rend your hearts, not your garments,
and return to the LORD, your God.
For gracious and merciful is he,
slow to anger, rich in kindness,
and relenting in punishment.
Perhaps he will again relent
and leave behind him a blessing,
Offerings and libations
for the LORD, your God.
Blow the trumpet in Zion!
proclaim a fast,
call an assembly;
Gather the people,
notify the congregation;
Assemble the elders,
gather the children
and the infants at the breast;
Let the bridegroom quit his room
and the bride her chamber.
Between the porch and the altar
let the priests, the ministers of the Lord, weep,
And say, “Spare, O Lord, your people,
and make not your heritage a reproach,
with the nations ruling over them!
Why should they say among the peoples,
‘Where is their God?’”
Then the Lord was stirred to concern for his land and took pity
on his people.
The Word of the Lord.

Responsorial Psalm

R: Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned.

Have mercy on me, O God, in your goodness;

in the greatness of your compassion wipe out my offense.
Thoroughly wash me from my guilt
and of my sin cleanse me.

R: Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned.

For I acknowledge my offense,

and my sin is before me always:
“Against you only have I sinned,
and done what is evil in your sight.”

R: Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned.

A clean heart create for me, O God,

and a steadfast spirit renew within me.
Cast me not out from your presence,
and your Holy Spirit take not from me

R: Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned.

Give me back the joy of your salvation,

and a willing spirit sustain in me.
O Lord, open my lips,
and my mouth shall proclaim your praise.

R: Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned.

Second Reading

A reading from the second letter of Paul to the

Corinthians
Be reconciled to God, now is the acceptable time.

Brothers and Sisters: We are ambassadors for Christ,

God as it were appealing through us. We implore you,
in Christ’s name: be reconciled to God! For our sakes
God made him who did not know sin to be sin, so that
in him we might become the very holiness of God.

As your fellow workers we beg you not to receive

the grace of God in vain. For he says, “In an acceptable
time I heard you; and on the day of salvation I helped
you”. Behold, now is a very acceptable time; behold,
now is the day of salvation.

The Word of the Lord.

Prayers of the Faithful

P: Prayer, penance and mutual help belong together. In the beginning of this time of
grace let us bring before our Father in heaven our desires for renewal of ourselves, of
the church and the world in which we live.

Response: Have mercy on your people, Lord.

1. For the whole church, redeemed by Christ but still on the way and weak, that
the people of God may always renew itself in its leaders and members. Let us
pray to the Lord.

2. For all Christians, that in this season of repentance that they may seek
reconciliation and unity and grow in the spirit of humble service. Let us pray
to the Lord.

3. For the mighty of this world, that they may work untiringly for peace among
nations make justice the basis of the social order and promote everywhere the
dignity of the human person. Let us pray to the Lord.

4. For those stuck in sin and discouragement, that they may find reconciliation
with God, with themselves, and with people. Let us pray to the Lord.

5. For those who are insensitive to the needs of others, that they may rediscover
their neighbour; for the mentally and physically ill, and for those whose
friendship has been betrayed, that they may keep faith in God and people. Let
us pray to the Lord.

6. For our school community, that they may give a voice and a name to the little
people and the exploited and restore their self-respect and their right. Let us
pray to the Lord.

7. For the administrators, faculty and staff of the Academy of St. Joseph, may they
look to the life of our greatest teacher – Jesus Christ, follow in his footsteps, and
educate in a manner of acceptance, compassion, determination, charity and
total gift of self to others. Let us pray to the Lord.

8. For the ASJ students with their families who are searching for the truth may
daily come to a deeper appreciation of faith in Jesus Christ. Let us pray to the
Lord.

9. For the sick, that they may find refuge and strength from the people
around them and from God, our Father. Let us pray to the Lord.

10. For our beloved dead, that they may enter the glory of Christ
resurrection. Let us pray to the Lord.

11.In silence, we offer our personal intention. Let us pray to the Lord.
P: Lord our God, in the forty days of lent, you give us every year new changes to grow
in love for you and for people. Help us to live in the spirit of Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Gospel Reading
A reading from the holy gospel according to Matthew
Your Father, who sees all that is done in secret, will reward you.

Jesus said to his disciples: "Be on guard

against performing religious acts for people to
see. Otherwise expect no recompense from
your heavenly Father. When you give alms, for
example, do not blow a horn before you in
synagogues and streets like hypocrites looking
for applause. You can be sure of this much,
they are already repaid. In giving alms you are
not to let your left hand know what your right
hand is doing. Keep your deeds of mercy secret,
and your Father who sees in secret will repay you.
"When you are praying, do not behave like
the hypocrites who love to stand and pray in
synagogues or on street corners in order to be
noticed. I give you my word, they are already
repaid. Whenever you pray, go to your room,
close your door, and pray to your Father in
private. Then your Father, who sees what no
man sees, will repay you.
"When you fast, you are not to look glum as
the hypocrites do. They change the appearance
of their faces so that others may see they are
fasting. I assure you, they are already repaid.
When you fast, see to it that you groom your
hair and wash your face. In that way no one
can see you are fasting but your Father who is
hidden; and your Father who sees what is hidden
will repay you."

This is the Gospel of the Lord.
