Acids and Bases Virtual Lab Worksheet

Last Name:______________________ First Name:_______________________ Core:____________________________

Instructions:
Complete the following questions using the pH Scale virtual lab. Use your findings from the simulations to help you
answer thoughtfully.

1. Battery Acid:
- Based on the virtual lab, what pH range do you expect for battery acid?
- If water is poured into the car battery, how might this affect the acidity of the solution?

2. Blood pH:
- Research the normal pH range of blood.
What might happen if the pH were to increase or decrease dramatically?

Why is it important for your body to maintain a specific pH level in the blood?

3. Chicken Soup:
- First, measure the pH of the chicken soup by itself using the virtual lab. What is the pH level?
- Now, mix half a cup of chicken soup and half a cup of water. How does this affect the pH of the mixture? Describe
what happens to the acidity or alkalinity.

4. Coffee:
- Measure the pH of coffee in the simulation.
If you mix coffee with water, how does the pH change?

- Compare the pH change to that of chicken soup.

5. Milk:
- Using the virtual lab, find the pH of milk:
- How does milk's pH compare to coffee's pH?

6. Orange Juice:
- Measure the pH of orange juice. If you add water, how does the acidity change?
- How does orange juice compare to other acidic beverages?

7. Soda Pop:
- Check the pH of soda pop in the virtual lab.
When water is added, how is the pH affected?

- Research on the web: What role does carbonation play in the acidity of soda?

- How do sugar and other ingredients influence its pH level?

8. Drain Cleaner:
- Measure the pH of 0.25 liters of drain cleaner in the virtual lab. What is the pH?
- Now, add 0.75 liters of water to make a total of 1 liter. How does the pH change?
- What is the name of this process?

9. Hand Soap:
- Measure the pH of hand soap.
How does adding water affect the pH?

- What does this suggest about changing the concentration of bases?

10. Spit (Saliva):

- Research the pH of spit using external resources (Internet)
- Do you think spit can cause an abrasion on your skin?

Why or why not?

11. Vomit:
- Measure the pH of vomit.

How is your stomach able to contain such a strong acid?

- Reseach what happens to your throat when you vomit.

12. Water (H₂O):

- Measure the pH of water in the virtual lab.
- How does water affect acids when mixed?

Search in internet for an image for of the chemical interaction between water and acids and bases Ask your teacher
for help.

13. Conclusion Acids and Bases:

- How acids affect bases when mixed together? Explain the process using the virtual lab findings.
