Review of Literature

Numerous studies have shown that mental health problems in students can negatively affect their
academic performance and social development. Common mental health issues in children and
adolescents include:

Anxiety: Often triggered by academic pressure, social challenges, and personal fears. It can lead to
difficulties in concentration, low self-esteem, and physical symptoms like headaches or stomachaches.

Depression: Symptoms may include feelings of sadness, hopelessness, irritability, and disinterest in
school activities. Depression is a major risk factor for suicidal thoughts and behaviors among
adolescents.

Stress: Academic stress, family issues, and peer pressure can create overwhelming emotional strain
for students, affecting their ability to focus and perform in school.

Behavioral Issues: Mental health challenges can manifest in behavioral problems, such as acting out,
withdrawing from peers, or engaging in risky behaviors.

Research suggests that when schools implement mental health programs, students benefit from a
more supportive and productive learning environment. Mental health education, early identification
of problems, and appropriate intervention strategies can reduce the negative impact of mental health
issues on students’ lives.
