Unit/2 Lesson/2 The Permissible (Halal) is Clear
Al-Nu’man bin Bashier RA said: I heard the Messenger SAW say:
“The permissible (Halal) is clear and the forbidden (Haram) is clear and between them are
matters that are doubtful. Not known to most people. So, whoever is wary of these
doubtful matters has absolved his religion and honor. And whoever indulges in them has
indulged in the Haram. His example is like a shepherd who herds his sheep too close to a
sanctuary, for they will eventually graze in it. Indeed, every king has a sanctuary and indeed
the sanctuary of Allah SWT is what He has made forbidden. Indeed, there lies within the
body a piece of flesh. If it is sound the whole body is sound and if it is corrupted. Then the
whole body is corrupted. Indeed, this is the heart. ” [Narrated by Muslim]
Q-1 Read the Noble Hadith carefully, then complete the given questions:
• What does the hadith say about what is clear and what is doubtful?
The Hadith states that the Halal is clear and the Haram is clear. However, there
are doubtful matters in between that are not known to most people.
• Why should one avoid doubtful matters according to the hadith?
It protects one's religion and honor. By staying away from them, a person keeps
themselves safe from possibly engaging in Haram.
• According to the hadith, what is the 'sanctuary' of Allah SWT?
What Allah (SWT) has made forbidden. Just like a king has private land that
others cannot enter, Allah’s sanctuary is the set of things that are Haram.
• What part of the body does the Prophet (SAW) say affects a person’s whole
being, and what does it represent?
The Prophet (SAW) said that if the heart is sound, the whole body is sound; if
it’s corrupted, the body is corrupted. The heart reflects one’s faith and moral
integrity.
• How can we apply this hadith in daily life?
Avoid doubts, seek knowledge of Halal and Haram, and stay mindful of
intentions to keep the heart pure.
8
Q-2 What are the means that assist in achieving the righteousness of the heart?
Fear and love of Allah. Steadfastness in the rules and
regulations mentioned in the Quran and
Sunnah
Continuous dua and asking Allah’s
guidance.
Q-3 What are the consequences of not avoiding indulgence in doubtful (borderline)
matters?
• The person may fall into haram acts.
• His honor will be demolished.
• His good deeds will be discarded.
Q-4 What benefits does a Muslim get from not indulging in unclear matters?
• He will save his honor and religion.
• He will get rewards in both worlds for following the path of Allah.
Q-5 Explain the relationship between this Hadith and the other one by the
Messenger SAW which says:
“Leave what makes you doubt for what does not make you doubt.”
[Narrated by trimidhi]
We should avoid unclear matters to save our Iman and Taqwa
Q-6 Referring to the saying of the Prophet SAW,
“There lies within the body a piece of flesh. If it is sound, the whole body is sound;
and if it is corrupted, the whole body is corrupted.”
