(a) An old man named Santiago had been fishing for days without
catching anything. He was tired and hungry, but he was determined to
catch a fish. One day, early in the morning, Santiago felt a tug on his
line. He knew that this was no ordinary fish. This was the biggest fish
he had ever caught. The fish fought hard, pulling the old man's boat
far out to sea. Santiago fought back, reeling in the line as fast as he
could. After hours of struggle, the old man finally landed the fish. It
was a huge marlin, the largest ha had ever seen. Santiago was
exhausted, but he was also proud. He had caught the fish of a lifetime.
As he was tying up the marlin, a group of sharks appeared. They
began to circle the boat, waiting for a chance to attack. Santiago
fought off the sharks for hours, but they were too many for him. One

(b) I must say that before I went to the US, I didn't consciously identify
as African But in the US, when- ever Africa came up, people turned to
me. I did dome to embrace this identity and, in many ways, I think of
myself now as African, although I still get quite irritable when Africa
is referred to as a country. After I had spent some years in the US as
an African, I began to understand my roommate's response to me. If I
had not grown up in Nigeria, and if all I knew about Africa were from
popular images, I too would think that Africa was a place of beautiful
landscapes, beautiful animals, and incomprehensible people unable to
speak for themselves and waiting to be saved by a kind, white
foreigner. I would see Africans in the same way that I, as a child, had
seen Fide's family. (The Danger of a Single Story)
