1. PURPOSE: To define system for ensuring operational control during Batteries

Charging and prevents operation failure
2. SCOPE: Applicable to all Batteries inside the premises.
3. RESPONSIBILITY:
Maintenance Head & Operating Maintenance personnel
4. INSTRUCTIONS
The operation of battery charging and checking should be carried out in line with
manufacturer’s recommendation and incorporating the safety requirements and industry
best practices.
a) Check the terminals are free from rusting or salt formation, if found use
petroleum jelly to remove the rust from terminals.
b) Check the post connectors are in good shape.
c) Check the nuts & connectors are intact, In case of loose fitting the same to be
corrected during A Check.
d) Check the electrolyte level as indicated by the manufacturer if found less,
Distilled water to be added.
e) Check the battery voltage against the output voltage and the limit shall remain
11.5 to 12.0. In case of less value observed the battery charging unit to be
checked & DG dynamo line also to be checked.
f) Check the specific gravity of the electrolyte and ensure it is within the 1.27 to
1.31.
g) Check the battery physical condition for any abnormal bulging.
h) Check the cable, Lug, for loose condition or any physical damage if found do
necessary correction.
During Maintenance the terminal post to be covered using nonconductive caps to
prevent short.

EHS Instruction
 Technicians shall wear safety shoes at all times.
 Battery charging mode always to be in triggle charging mode and it shall be in
auto mode.
 Technician shall wear safety goggle and Nitrile glove.

 In case of tightening ensure metal surface didn’t touch both positive and negative
terminals & external body at the same time.
 Technician shall stand on electrical Mat which complies to IS 15652.
 MSDS of battery acid to be made available on the battery storage area
 Smoke detector to be made available in battery charging area
 Used & damaged battery should be drained before moving to scrap yard and
store in the designated area
 Waste batteries are disposed as per procedure for Waste Management.
 Ensure Proper ventilation system in charging area
 The terminals of the battery to be covered by Nonconductive cap
 The distilled water, if required to be stored in proper identified place with MSDS
made available near storage area.
 In case of accidental contact of battery electrolyte expose it to the running water.
 Air vent caps shall be in cleaned condition all time.

Procedure
 Ensure the battery is placed on top of wooden seat to avoid quick discharge.
 Check the terminals for loose contact.
 Check and ensure the battery charger is in auto function mode.
 Check specific gravity of the battery.
 It should be between 1.15 to 1.30
 Maintain the range by adding distilled water.
 Check the minimum level of the electrolyte. It should be 15mm above the plate.
 Cap the battery and clean the surface of battery.
 Dispose the waste as per waste management procedure.
 Check Voltage. Maintain voltage range between 12 to 13 volts.
 Add petroleum gel in the terminals to avoid rusting
 If the battery is not getting charged than replace the battery by new one
 Store the used/ waste batteries in designated location and dispose it as per waste
management procedure.
 If the battery is found to be leaking or if there is any incident found due to battery
then raise an EHS incident in GSD system.

 Over charging of battery to be prevented & the charger to be checked for proper
functioning and tripping as there are chances of battery explosion or discharging
of hydrogen gas due to overcharging of battery.
 Use appropriate tool (spanner with one end insulation), while tightening the
terminals.

Operation of Battery charging panel

 Check the incoming voltage to be in the range of 415 + / - 5 %
 Check the battery charging current to be in the range of 3 to 5A
 Check the charging voltage to be between 110 V & 130 V
 Check the electrical and battery connections.
 Verify that all connections are tight and secure.
 Using the voltage meter, verify that power is available at the receptacle or control
switch. If not, verify if the main breaker has been tripped, and reset it.
 During PPM check the electrolyte level.
 Ensure Hydrometer fixed on battery is in safe zone.
 Check temperature of charging panel if it trips on over temperature. Investigate
the cause and rectify the same
 Check DC distribution panel breakers, it should be ON
 Check earthing of panel is intact
 During PPM, check all cables for heating and signs of discoloration and burning
