Assignment 01 International Humanitarian Law
International Humanitarian Law (IHL) can be defined as a set of rules and principles that
govern the conduct of armed conflicts, aimed at protecting individuals who are not
participating in hostilities, such as civilians, medical personnel, and those who are hors de
combat (wounded or captured combatants). IHL seeks to limit the effects of armed conflict
for humanitarian reasons, ensuring the humane treatment of all individuals and the
protection of civilian objects. It encompasses both the laws of war (Hague Law), which
regulate the means and methods of warfare, and the Geneva Law, which focuses on the
protection of persons and property during conflicts. IHL is a branch of public international
law, derived from treaties, customary law, and judicial decisions, and applies to both
international and non-international armed conflicts.
