MA101 - Calculus

Autumn 2024
Tutorial 5

September 6, 2024

1. Check whether f (x) = e−|x| is differentiable at x = 0. If yes, then find f ′ (0).

2. Give an example of a function f : R → R which is continuous everywhere and is
differentiable everywhere except at two points.
3. Let f : R → R be such that
f (x + y) = f (x)f (y)
for all x, y ∈ R and f ′ (0) exists. Show that f is differentiable on R and
f ′ (x) = f ′ (0)f (x)
for all x ∈ R.
4. Let f : [a, b] → R be continuous and differentiable on (a, b) such that f (a) = a and
f (b) = b. Show that there exist distinct c1 , c2 ∈ (a, b) such that
f ′ (c1 ) + f ′ (c2 ) = 2.

5. Using Lagrange’s Mean Value Theorem, show that | sin(x) − sin(y)| ≤ |x − y| for all
x, y ∈ R.
6. Show that no such function f can exist which satisfies f ′′ (x) > 0 for all x ∈ R,
f ′ (0) = 1 and f ′ (1) = 1.
7. Let f be continuous on [a, b] and differentiable on (a, b). If f (a) and f (b) are of
opposite signs and f ′ (x) ̸= 0 for all x ∈ (a, b), show that there exists a unique
x0 ∈ (a, b) such that f (x0 ) = 0
8. Using Lagrange’s Mean Value Theorem, show that
cos(x) ≥ 1 − x
for all x ≥ 0.
9. Prove that the polynomial x3 − 15x + c = 0 has atmost one root in the interval [−2, 2]
for any real number c.
10. Let f : [0, 1] → R be differentiable with f (0) = 0 and f (1) = 1. Show that the
equation f ′ (x) = 2x has a solution on (0, 1).
