Frequently Asked Questions 3 Class 12 PHYSICS
1.a)Derive an expression for the force per unit length between two long straight parallel current carrying
conductors. Hence define SI unit of current(ampere).
b)Two long parallel straight wires, A and B are 2.5 cm apart in air. They carry 5 A and 2.5 A current respectively
in opposite directions. Calculate the magnitude of the force exerted by wire A on a 10 cm length of wire B.
2.a)State Biot -Savart Law. Using this law, find an expression for the magnetic field at the centre of a circular
coil of N turns, radius R, carrying current I.
b)Sketch the magnetic field for a circular current loop, clearly indicating the direction of the field.
3.a)Using Ampere’s circuit law, find an expression for the magnetic field at a point on the axis of a long solenoid
with closely wound turns.
b)A closely wound solenoid 80 cm long has 5 layers of windings of 400 turns each. The diameter of the solenoid
is 1.8 cm. If the current carried is 8 A, estimate the magnitude of B inside the solenoid near its centre.
b) A galvanometer coil has a resistance of 15 ohm and it shows full scale deflection for a current of 4 mA.
Convert it into an ammeter of range 0 to 6A.
b) A voltmeter of a certain range is constructed by connecting a resistance of 980 ohm in series with a
galvanometer. When the resistance of 470 ohm is connected in series, the range gets halved. Find the resistance of
the galvanometer.
6. Derive an expression for the force acting on a current carrying straight conductor kept in a magnetic field.
State the rule which is used to find the direction of this force. Give the condition under which this force is
maximum and minimum.
7) Derive an expression for torque acting on a rectangular current carrying loop kept in a uniform magnetic field

8.a) Draw the magnetic field lines for a current carrying solenoid when a rod made of copper, aluminium and
iron are inserted within the solenoid.
II) Why are the field lines repelled when a diamagnetic material is placed in an external uniform magnetic field?
b) How does the mutual inductance of a pair of coils change when (i) distance between the coil is increased and
(ii) number of turns in the coils is increased?
c) A pair of adjacent coils has a mutual inductance of 1.5 H .If the current in one coil changes from 0 to 20 A in
0.5 second, what is the change of flux linkage with the other coil?
10.a) What is induced EMF? Write Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction. Express it mathematically.
b) The self inductance of a solenoid of 600 turns is 108 mH. What is the self inductance of a coil having 500
turns with the same length, the same radius and the same medium?
b)A series LCR circuit is connected to an AC source having voltage V =Vo sinwt. Derive expression for the
impedance, instantaneous, current and its phase relationship to the applied voltage. Find the expression for
resonant frequency.
12.a)Show that the current leads the voltage in phase by 90 degree in an AC circuit containing an ideal capacitor.
b) Explain why current flows through an ideal capacitor when it is connected to an AC source, but not when it is
connected to a DC source in a steady state.
13. The primary coil of an ideal step up transformer has 100 turns and transformation ratio is also 100.The input
voltage and power are 220 V and 1100 W respectively. Calculate.
14.a) Explain with the help of a labelled diagram, the principle and working of an AC generator. Write the
expression for the EMF generated in the coil in terms of speed of rotation. Can the current produced by an AC
generator be measured with a moving coil galvanometer?
b)A circular coil of cross sectional area 200 cm2 and 20 turns is rotated about the vertical diameter with angular
speed of 50 rad/s in a uniform magnetic field of magnitude 3 x 10-2 T. Calculate the maximum value of the
