your Son, that we may gladly minister to all the world, through
Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen

THE FIRST READING Isaiah 51:1-6

Lector: Word of God, word of life.
All: Thanks be to God.

PSALM 138
Sung to the tune of ELW #501 “He Leadeth Me: Oh, Blessed Thought”

I’ll praise You, Lord, with all my heart; before the “gods” I’ll praise impart.
I’ll bow down toward Your holy place, and praise Your name for truth and grace.

You have exalted o’er all things, Your name and word, which true life bring.
The day I called, You answered me; You made me bold and strong to be.

May all the kings of earth praise You, Lord, when they hear Your words so true.
May they sing of the ways of God; the Lord’s great glory known abroad.
© CCLI #54976 / © ONE LICENSE #A-700000 Page 4

For though the Lord on high is great, yet He regards our lowly state,
And looks on those who humble are, but proud ones He knows from afar.

Though I walk in the midst of strife, e’en there You do preserve my life.
You stretch Your hand against my foes; Your right hand saves; You them oppose.

The Lord’s own purposes for me, He will accomplish and fulfill.
Your love, O Lord, forever stands; do not forsake works of Your hands.

THE SECOND READING Romans 12:1-8

Lector: Word of God, word of life.
All: Thanks be to God.

THE HOLY GOSPEL

Lector: We invite you to stand for the reading of the Gospel.
All: Alleluia. Alleluia. Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the
words of eternal life. Alleluia. (Repeat)
Lector: The Holy Gospel according to Matthew 16:13-20
The Gospel is read.
Lector: This is the Gospel of the Lord.
All: Thanks be to God.

THE SERMON Pastor Wilbur Holz

HYMN “The Church’s One Foundation” ELW #654

And born of the virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, died, and was buried.

On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven,
And is seated at the right hand of the Father.

The communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
The resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

OFFERTORY “I Need Thee Every Hour” by Robert Lowry

AS THE GRAINS OF WHEAT

Were gathered into one to become our bread;
So may all your people from all the ends of earth
Be gathered into one in you.
As this cup of blessing is shared within our midst,
May we share the presence of your love. (Refrain)
Let this be a foretaste of all that is to come

A thought to ponder heard at the South Dakota Synod Assembly

“Hope requires us to check our optimism at the door and enter the future without
illusions.”
Last month the council voted to award two seminary students with $1,000.00 scholarships out of
the Margaret Petersen fund. One of these people was Amber Wichmann. Amber is currently
serving at Lord of Life Lutheran Church in addition to attending seminary. She sent us a thank you
note that read:

Dear Scholarship committee, Penny, and Wilbur,

Thank you! Your generous gift of money came as a huge blessing! This money will
help pay for my travel and book expenses for my fall semester at Wartburg Seminary.
It is with sincere gratitude, I send my thanks.

Peace,
Amber Wichmann

Dear friend,

The significant loss of life and damage caused by the wildfires in Hawaii have turned our prayers and
attention to mourning those lost, supporting the survivors and how Lutheran Disaster Response can assist
with recovery.

Exacerbated by strong winds, wildfires on Maui have claimed dozens of lives and have destroyed homes,
businesses and lines of communication. The Big Island of Hawaii has also been impacted by wildfires,
and more islands remain vulnerable to additional fires this season.

Lutheran Disaster Response is prepared to accompany our neighbors in Hawaii impacted by these
wildfires. Will you consider a gift today?

Lutheran Disaster Response is coordinating with the Pacifica Synod and other partners to assess the
needs of people impacted by the wildfires. We will work with them to provide for immediate needs and
long-term recovery amid the widespread destruction. Lutheran Disaster Response is committed to
accompanying recovering communities in the years ahead.

By standing with Maui’s wildfire survivors, we follow Christ’s call to share hope and healing with our
neighbors in need.
