Excellence through Meditation
Stress Relief | Connect | Growth | Clarity
A 40-Day Online Meditation Program for Leaders and Aspiring Leaders
Wisdom Note - 4 | 7th Nov 2024
Meditation helps to reprogram the subconscious mind and expand the conscious mind with
higher wisdom. Meditation moves our brain into a highly beneficial brainwave states of
alpha, theta, and delta frequencies that cause deep relaxation, solutions, insights, and
healing.
Read more about it in yesterday's Wisdom Note.
“Beneficial States of Brainwaves”
Meditation helps to reprogram the subconscious mind and expand the conscious mind with
higher wisdom. It helps remove unwanted thoughts and beliefs, and it increases our
learning power. The conscious mind is responsible for logical reasoning, creativity,
decision-making, and cognitive capabilities. Meditation increases the number of neural
pathways and enhances these capabilities.
The subconscious mind is responsible for old habits, emotions, reactions, and hardwired
behaviors. Repetitive actions or heightened emotional moments go into the subconscious
mind and become long-term memories. We are predominantly driven by the subconscious
mind. Researches have estimated that 95% of our thoughts, feelings and memories live in
our subconscious mind(4).
The analytical mind is the barrier between the conscious mind and the subconscious mind.
Every time we learn something new, the analytical mind often blocks learning because it
tries to analyze things with the influence of our past experiences. It becomes a barrier that
keeps us away from absorbing important truths easily. For instance, when we hear “our
thoughts and feelings create our reality,” our analytical mind doesn’t allow us to accept this
statement because it continues to believe that our past negative experiences are mostly
caused by other people or outside circumstances. Regular meditation lowers the
unnecessary activities of the analytical mind and helps to reprogram the subconscious mind
with more expansive knowledge that opens up new possibilities.
Brainwaves:
The brain is an electrochemical organ in which electrical communication happens through
neurons, and this electrical activity is measured in frequencies called brainwaves. There are
five types of brainwaves ranging between 0 - 100 Hz.
EEG testing on participants practicing meditation reveals that meditation affects brain wave
states. It alters brainwave patterns to contain mostly slower and low-frequency brainwaves.
It helps us to slow down, relax, recharge, and connect. When we are more relaxed, we think
clearly and absorb more. Regular meditation increases alpha and theta wave activity and
decreases beta wave states.
Beta Waves (16 - 40 Hz): We tap into the low beta state (16 to 24 Hz) called wakeful
relaxation state when we are awake, solving problems and relaxing. We also experience
high beta waves extending from 25 to 40 Hz while we are in stressful situations during
which we are often filled with negativity and anxiety. In this frequency, people tend to be
more judgmental, self-critical, and nit-picky.
Alpha Waves (8 - 15 Hz): A deep relaxation state that we experience in the early stages of
meditation and while slipping into sleep. It brings about inner peace and tranquility. It is the
state of inspiration.
Theta Waves (4 - 7 Hz): It is a dream like state that occurs during deep sleep and deep
meditation. It helps us connect to our intuition easily, allowing us to receive messages
beyond normal conscious awareness. This is the state where we get to experience deeper
meditational experiences and feel deep emotions.
Delta Waves (0 - 3 Hz): These are the slowest waves experienced during deep dreamless
sleep or NREM sleep and in very deep meditation. This is when powerful healing and
regeneration take place in the physical body.
Gamma Waves (40 - 100 Hz): This is considered to be a supernatural state. We may go into
this state during deep meditations where spontaneous remissions might happen, or
oneness and bliss can be felt. These deeper experiences reprogram the subconscious mind
significantly. In this state, we are likely to experience a quantum shift in our state of being,
as per findings recorded in the book ‘You are the Placebo’ by Dr. Joe Dispenza.
Our brains are usually in the low beta wave state during the last few minutes of the day
before we fall asleep. Once we close our eyes and attempt to sleep, the brainwaves
descend from beta to alpha, to theta, and then finally to the delta state by the time we are
fully asleep. Similarly, meditation helps to calm the mind down, which allows the
brainwaves to shift from beta state, all the way down to delta waves, and even into gamma
sometimes.
These findings also demonstrated that the effect meditation has on brain wave activity
carries over to long periods after the meditation is complete. In other words, a regular
meditation practice can change the brain wave activity for years to come.
