QUESTION TAG
• Di samping menempatkan kata kerja bantu to be (am, is, are) di depan pokok kalimat, masih ada cara lain
untuk membentuk kalimat bertanya. Cara lain yang dimaksud adalah bagian akhir kalimat pertanyaan yang
disebut question tag. Bagian akhir kalimat pertanyaan ini dapat diartikan: bukan?
• Cara membentuk bagian akhir kalimat pertanyaan: Bila sebutan atau kalimat ini positif (berita) maka
bagian akhir kalimat pertanyaannya adalah negatif; dan sebaliknya bila sebutan atau kalimat negatif
(menyangkal) maka bagian akhir kalimat pertanyaannya positif.
• Karakteristik :
1. Jika kalimatnya positif, maka question tagnya negative
2. Jika kalimatnya negative, maka question tagnya positif

• Pengecualian untuk subject I, question tagnya bukan amn’t I, melaikan aren’t I.

• Jika menggunakan simple present atau simple past, maka gunakan do/does atau did.

• Jika subjeknya somebody, everyone, someone, everybody, no one, dan nobody, maka gunakan they dalam
question tag.
Contoh. “Everybody went to the restaurant, didn’t they?”
• Jika subjeknya something, everything, dan nothing, maka gunakan it dalam question tag.
Contoh. “Something is moving, isn’t it?”
• Jika kalimatnya menggunakan modals (can, could, will, would, shall, should, dsb.), gunakan modals untuk
question tagnya. Khusus untuk modals have to, gunakan kata bantu do
Contoh. “Indri will come back soon, won’t she?” “They have to eat now, don’t they?”
• Jika kalimatnya mengandung sebuah kata dengan arti negative seperti, nobody, hardly no one, rarelt
nothing, seldom, barely, never, etc., gunakan question tag positif.
Contoh. “No one comes to my house, do they?” “She never seems to care, does she?”
• Jika kalimatnya dimulai dengan let’s, maka question tagnya adalah shall we.
