This is the typical NE commissioning sequence. Your sequence may vary depending on the equipment
configuration and completed installation of the shelves and will be based on your PPT file. Refer to
Installation and System Turn-Up Guide for all the detailed procedures.
Verify equipment installation (step 1)
Visual inspection for shelf installation and cabling
Rack allocation according to station layout
Shelf allocation in the rack according to station layout
Shelf configuration (boards installed) according to plant documentation
Shelf role (functioning as master or as slave shelf) according to plant documentation
For functioning as sub-shelf the rotary dial switch settings need to be changed
Connections between equipment and DDF/ODF according to plant documentation
Rack and shelf ground connections
Power supply connections
Verify that the system is spotlessly clean, e.g. no dust inside the fans, within the backplane and on
the boards
Verify that all blank front face plates are plugged and fixed with their screws.

Set shelf ID (step2)
Shelf ID must be set by using two rotary switches located on the multi function card of the
1830 PSS-8x/24x
Shelf ID settings must be unique for each shelf in a NE.
Shelf Left Right
Master #1 8 1
Extension shelf #2 0 2
Rotating Extension shelf #3 0 3
Switches
... … …
Extension shelf #15 0 F
… … …
Extension shelf #24 1 8
Default setting 0 0

Note: At the time of delivery, the rotary switches on the multi function card are set to “00” (MSB = 0, LSB =
0). These settings have to be changed to “meaningful” values prior to being able to take a shelf into
operation.
Switch on equipment (step 3)
Equipment is started up by turning on the circuit breaker on the power supply filters step
by step for related equipment
After systems boot-up with empty database, the hardware in the system has to be
configured via equipment provisioning dialog and WebUI (refer to the User Provisioning
Guide)
Note: Before starting any test or measurement, allow a warm-up period
of the 1830 PSS shelf, for at least 30 min

Verify fan module operation (step 4)
To verify correct working of the fan modules for each installed NE and for each fan module
a LED test should be carried out.
Note: As long as the sub-rack has
not been provisioned, the LED color
stays “Red”; when provisioned the
color shall be “Green”.

Ethernet connection between PC and PSS-8x/24x (step 5)
Connect a PC directly to a PSS-8x/24x to access the WebUI or CLI by using the CIT port of
the active controller card
Use a shielded CAT6 crossover LAN cable available with RJ45 connectors at both ends
Use DHCP on your PC to automatically receive the correct IP from the PSS-8x/24x
Open a command window on your PC and type ipconfig and verify the IP address assigned
by the NE to your PC is “172.16.0.x”.

S03M02 9 Confidential
Note: On multi-shelf network elements, the CIT port is active on the master shelf only.
Optional: change interface standard to SDH mode (step 6)
Initial default setting for a new NE is SONET
To use SDH mode, SONET/SDH mode setting needs to be changed during first time turn up
Use CLI to change SONET/SDH mode
Start CLI
Type show version
Sample output: Software Version: 1830PSS-10.1-0
Copy the string after “Software Version” (“1830PSS-10.1-0” in this example).
This will be used as the password for the SDH mode command.

Note: Changing the interface standard (SONET/SDH mode) will cause the database to be cleared, the node
to be cold reset and all services to be deleted.
Therefore, this procedure is to be performed very early, if necessary at all (prior to initializing the
database).
Optional: change to SDH mode [cont.]
Type config admin mode sdh <pw>
Where <pw> is the password copied from the previous step
Result: The following warning will appear:
Type yes
You will be logged out.
Wait approximately 5 minutes for the NE to reboot.

As an option the PSS-24x can be initialized using a prepared file. This file based system initialization can
reduce the NE setup time. The software installation process is enhanced by the capability to apply
parameters from a file located on the applied USB key at installation time.
The parameters are provided from the external tool set (PPT) and comprised in a single, NE instance
specific file on an USB key which is applied for software installation. Alternatively, handcrafted file input is
accepted transparently by the NE, simply based on existence on plugged USB key at times of the specific
turn-up cli command execution.

Each NE requires a loopback IP address for IP connectivity. The initial default setting of the loopback IP
address for a new NE is 172.16.1.1/32. A warning message will appear on the System Properties screen
until that initial default setting is changed.
Note: Each node requires a unique loopback IP address. Therefore the initial default setting of the loopback
IP address must be changed. The subnet mask related to the loopback IP address must be set to
255.255.255.255.
