Learning Outcomes
After careful study of this module, students should be able to:
Define and explain fundamental concepts of Static of Rigid bodies
Identify the axioms of Mechanics.
Define and explain Scalar and Vector quantities.
Solve application problems involving conversion of units.
Introduction to Engineering Mechanics
Engineering is the application of the mathematical and physical sciences
(physics, chemistry, and biology) to the design and manufacture of items that
benefit humanity.
Mechanics iA branch of physics concerned with the behavior of physical bodies
subject to Force, F or Displacement, S.
Engineering Mechanics is the branch of science in which it deals with the
laws and principles of mechanics, and their application with engineering
problems.

MECHANICS
RIGID BODY DEFORMABLE BODY
FLUIDS

•Dynamics •Mechanics of Materials •Fluid Dynamics
Rigid Body define as the mount of matter the part of which are fixed in
position relative to one another.
Statics of Rigid Bodies
Statics – the study of rigid bodies at rest or at a constant velocity. Concerning
the determination of internal and external forces acting on a body.
a=0 v = constant or v = 0
Force – define as that of which changes, or tends to change the state of
motion of a body. If a force F acts on a particle of mass m, Newton’s second
law states that F = ma where m is mass and a is acceleration (F = mg where g
is acceleration due to gravity equal to 9.81 m/s2 for metric system)
Units of Force
➢ SI (Metric) System 1.0 kg . m/s2 = 1.0 N (Newton)
➢ English System 1.0 slug . ft/s2 = 1.0 lb (Pound)
Force System
Force System is any arrangement where two or more forces act on a body or
on a group of related bodies.
Kinds of Force System
A. According to plane:
Coplanar – lines of action of a set of Non-Coplanar – line of action of all the
forces lie in a single plane forces lie in one plane
B. According to line of action:
Concurrent Force System
– the lines of action of forces pass
through a common point.
Parallel Force System
– lines of action of forces are parallel.
Non-concurrent Force System
– lines of action of forces are neither
parallel nor intersect in a comment point.
Newton’s Law of Motion
1. Law I
– A particle originally at rest, or moving in a straight
line with constant velocity, tends to remain in this
state provided the particle is not subjected to an
unbalanced force,
2. Law II
– A particle acted upon by an unbalanced force F experiences
an acceleration a that has the same direction as the force and a
magnitude that is directly proportional to the force. If F is applied
to a particle of mass m, this law may be expressed mathematically
as
3. Law III
– The mutual forces of action and reaction between two
particles are equal, opposite, and collinear.
Axioms of Mechanics
1. The parallelogram Law
- the resultant of two forces is the diagonal of the parallelogram formed on
the vectors of these forces.
2. Two forces are in equilibrium only when equal in magnitude, opposite in
direction, and collinear in action.
Axioms of Mechanics
3. A set of forces in equilibrium may be added to any system of forces without
changing the effect of the original system
4. Action and reaction forces are equal but oppositely directed.
Scalar and Vector Quantities
Scalar- quantities which possess magnitude only and can be added arithmetically.
Vector – quantities which posses both magnitude and direction and can be combined geometrically
Dimensional Check
𝑣 2 = 𝑣02 + 2𝑎𝑠
𝑓𝑡 2 𝑓𝑡 2 𝑓𝑡
2 = 2 + 2 𝑥𝑓𝑡
𝑠𝑒𝑐 𝑠𝑒𝑐 𝑠𝑒𝑐
Conversion of Units
Example:
Convert an acceleration of 1 in/s2 to its equivalent in miles/year2
