ABSTRACT
Electric bikes (e-bikes) represent an increasing share of urban mobility due to their
small sizes and clean fuels. This study developed an environmental life cycle assessment
model to evaluate e-bikes powered by lithium-ion battery, compared with a petrol car and a
battery electric vehicle (BEV) for commuting
Electric vehicles (EVs) are a promising technology for achieving a sustainable transport
sector in the future, due to their very low to zero carbon emissions, low noise, high
efficiency, and flexibility in grid operation and integration. This chapter includes an
overview of electric vehicle technologies as well as associated energy storage systems and
charging mechanisms. Different types of electric-drive vehicles are presented. These
include battery electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles
and fuel cell electric vehicles. The topologies for each category and the enabling
technologies are discussed. Various power train configurations, new battery technologies,
and different charger converter topologies are introduced. Electrifying transportation not
only facilitates a clean energy transition, but also enables the diversification of
transportation’s sector fuel mix and addresses energy security concerns. In addition, this can
be also seen as a viable solution, in order to alleviate issues associated with climate change.
Furthermore, charging standards and mechanisms and relative impacts to the grid from
charging vehicles are also presented.
An electric vehicle (EV) is a vehicle that uses electric motors or traction motors for propulsion.
Whereas electric motors are applied in a wide range of vehicles, traction motors are more
specific and used in systems such as locomotives. The powering system for EVs can be
external, for example powering through a collector system by electricity from off-vehicle
sources, or may be self-contained within the vehicle, e.g., with a battery, fuel cells, or an
electric generator. Electric vehicles can have only electric motors, but they can also have a
combination of one or more electric motors with at least one other propulsion system. Such
vehicles are a special category of EVs, called electric hybrid vehicles (EHV).
Although electric vehicles are at the focus of recent mobility discussions, they exist for
centuries (Wakefield, 1994) and are present among a wide spectrum of transport modes (e.g.,
road and rail vehicles, surface and underwater vessels, electric aircraft, etc.). However, with the
advances in the domain of energy storage solutions, the production of personal vehicles
with electric propulsion has seen its raise over the past decade. This is supported by a wide
range of policy measures aiming to increase the share of electric vehicles in mobility systems
There are several reasons that motivate this increase in the share of electric
vehicles, including the fact that they emit no tailpipe carbon dioxide (CO 2) and other
pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), nonmethane volatile organic compounds (NMHC),
and particulate matter (PM) at the point of use. The European Commission has evaluated
that the EV “tank-to-wheels” efficiency is a factor of about three higher than internal
combustion engine vehicles (Green motion consortium, 2020). In particular, the emission of
fine particles, which are less than or equal to 2.5 microns in diameter, also known as PM2.5,
has a particularly bad impact on human health. According to the European environment
agency (EEA, 2018a, 2018b), the emissions of PM2.5, together with the emissions
V
of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and ozone (O3) are responsible for more than 480,000 premature
death annually. Another study, the one by the International Council and Clean
Transportation (Anenberg et al., 2019), shows that in EU countries, between 70% and 75%
of the deaths caused by the emissions of the transport sector are due to road transport in
particular. Hence, air pollution is an important issue for many urban (and not only urban)
authorities as it is estimated to have a deeply negative impact on public health and strongly
impacts the smart city and smart mobility aspects of urban living. In this context, the
introduction of EVs, instead of traditional combustion engine vehicles, can support the
mitigation of transport-related negative externalities, which is particularly relevant in urban
settlements due to the high density of traffic, and frequent occurrence of traffic congestions.
VI

1. EXCUTIVE SUMMARY
Climate change poses a major challenge for Annavaram Increasing emissions in the transport
sector is seen by many as the most serious barrier to meeting our climate change obligations.
This mentality must change: future transport provision should be seen as the solution instead of
the problem in reducing emissions. Carbon emissions from the transport sector, at 268 thousand
tons (2008) and Nitrogen dioxide emissions from on-road transport, at 2.6 million ton (2008)
are rising inexorably and are forecast to reach 268 thousand tons and 3.5 million tons by 2015
respectively. Emissions reduction policy in transport needs to be turned on its head; we need to
think differently. By developing a symbiotic relationship between smarter energy generation
and passenger car transport, through electric vehicles (EV) charged on the electricity grid, we
can not only provide an exciting support for the renewable energy industry, but also a more fuel
efficient, cost effective and power efficient national vehicles fleet that produces no carbon
emissions at all. In addition to climate change impacts ,a continuing dependence on imported
oil carries significant risks for security of energy supply. Annavaram dependency on imported
fuels is around 70% (2004), and will grow to 91.6% by the year2020. This is particularly
relevant to the transport sector, which is 99% dependent on fossil fuels.1 It may sound
unrealistic to some, but the long-term ambition should be to reduce transport fossil fuel imports
to zero by developing an entirely new way of powering cars and heavier vehicles. Why spend
some 1 billion each year abroad to purchase fossil fuel for passenger cars (and €2.55 billion for
transport overall) when we can develop our own fuel sources here at home and develop an
industry around that fuel provision? However, it’s clear that in addition to smarter and more
energy efficient use of existing transport infrastructure, there is an urgent need to be radical
about changing entirely the types of vehicles and how they are powered. As has been
recognized in many other countries,2the biggest potential reductions in emissions from
transport will be realized as a result of new technology, including the wide deployment of EVs
in the medium to long-term. The case for EVs is compelling. Industry consensus is that Battery
EVs (BEVs) will deliver better results in terms of climate change impacts than Hybrid EVs.
The employment potential resulting from the more widespread use of EVs is also an important
secondary factor. It is important we act now to put a strategic roadmap in place to encourage the
rapid deployment of BEVs in Annavaram. This shift to BEVs is going to happen across the
world with or without early adoption in Annavaram. However, there is an opportunity for
Annavaram to be an early mover, to develop an infrastructure that will allow our country to
benefit from being an incubator for the global EV revolution and enjoy all the research and
development opportunities that comes with that ambition. We can achieve not only immediate
carbon savings in the short-term, but also send clear market signals that Annavaram intends to
be a world leader in the technology and application behind the shift away from fossil fuel
driven engines towards BEVs. This can be an exciting new industry employing scientists,
environmentalists, marketing and sales people, engineers, mechanics, IT and software
X
developers and so many more as part of the new green economy.

2. OVERVIEW OF THE COMMUNITY
Currently, there are 59 electric bikes on sale in Annavaram. Of these, the Elecson Eco is the
cheapest EV while the BMW CE 04 is the most expensive electric bike in Annavaram.
Upcoming electric bikes in Annavaram include Tork Electric Bike, Evoke Urban S, Gogoro 2
Series, Emote Electric Surge among others. Locate a charging station in your city
When it comes to buying an electric two-wheeler, one of the most crucial factors is the riding
range. Owing to the lack of charging infrastructure, Annavaram customers hold themselves
back from purchasing an EV. And that’s justifiable as the thought of getting stranded miles
away from home with a drained battery, with no charging point at disposal, sounds daunting.
Fortunately, there are a few electric two-wheelers in Annavaram that address this issue to a
certain extent by offering an impressive riding range. Well, until the Annavaram charging
infrastructure is developed enough, you can choose an EV from one of these options which can
go on for over-100kilometers before asking for a recharge. However, it’s worth noting that
unlike mainstream ICE-powered bike makers, most of these brands have their dealership reach
only in select cities in Annavaram.
