● INTRODUCTION & PRACTICAL SKILL OF THE MANUAL
OPERATED MILLING MACHINE
➢ A milling machine is a machine tool used for machining
solid materials. It performs a variety of operations, such as
cutting, shaping, drilling, and slotting metals, plastics, and
other materials. Milling machines use rotary cutters to
remove material from a workpiece by advancing (or
feeding) in a direction at an angle with the axis of the tool.
They are widely used in manufacturing and metalworking
industries for creating precision components and parts
with complex shapes and features.

➢ Outcomes:
During the internship, I developed practical skills in operating
a manual operated milling machine. This included:
1. *Machine Setup and Preparation:* I learned how to set
up the milling machine for various machining operations,
ensuring proper alignment and securing workpieces
effectively.

2. *Tool Selection and Setup:* Understanding the selection

of cutting tools based on material type and machining
requirements. Proper installation and setup of tools in the
machine's spindle were also covered.
3. *Basic Milling Operations:* Performing fundamental
milling operations such as facing, slot cutting, and drilling. This
involved mastering the use of machine controls for accurate
material removal.

4. *Measurement and Quality Control:* Employing

measurement tools (e.g., calipers, micrometers) to verify
dimensions and ensure precision in machining operations.
5. *Safety Procedures:* Adhering to safety protocols to
mitigate risks associated with machine operation and tool
handling, emphasizing the importance of personal protective
equipment (PPE).

➢ Objectives and Utilization:-

The primary objective of acquiring skills on the manual
operated milling machine was to develop competency in
traditional machining techniques. This training enabled me to
contribute effectively in the following ways:

1. *Enhanced Workshop Capabilities:* Supporting the

workshop team by independently performing milling tasks,
thereby increasing productivity and efficiency in
manufacturing processes.
2. *Problem Solving and Adaptability:* Gaining the ability to
troubleshoot minor issues with the milling machine and adjust
machining parameters as required to achieve desired
outcomes.
3. *Skill Integration:* Integrating manual milling skills with
theoretical knowledge gained from academic studies, applying
principles of material removal and machine operation in
practical scenarios.

➢ Knowledge Acquisition:
Through hands-on experience and guidance from experienced
mentors, I acquired knowledge in the following areas:
1. Machine Components and Functions:- Understanding the
anatomy of a manual operated milling machine, including its
main components and their respective functions in the
machining process.
2. *Cutting Tools and Materials:-Familiarity with various
cutting tools used in milling operations, their applications, and
considerations for selecting tools based on material
properties.
3. *Operational Techniques:* Developing proficiency in
operating machine controls to achieve precise cuts and
finishes on workpieces, emphasizing speed, feed rate, and
depth of cut adjustments.
4. *Safety Protocols:* Awareness of safety measures and
best practices to ensure a safe working environment when
operating machinery and handling cutting tools.
➢ In conclusion –
The internship training on manual operated milling machines
provided me with valuable practical skills, enabling me to
contribute effectively to machining operations while ensuring
adherence to safety standards and achieving desired
machining outcomes. This experience significantly enhanced
my understanding of traditional machining processes and their
application in industrial settings.
