Darkness of Space
Darkness of Space
At Old School we are all about the classic version of role playing games that were
popular in the late 1970s to the early 1980s. You know the games. You played them as kids.
They were far better than many of the later versions that came along. At Old School we bring you
high quality adventures and adventure products for gaming at a reasonable price.
The adventures themselves are well thought out. They have a few puzzles, riddles and
other encounters as well as plenty of monster bashing action. Some have been thoroughly play
tested by other gamers. The goal is to provide you the game master adventures to use on the spur
of the moment when players want to play and you do not have the time to prepare something
spectacular.

Qhix'aks, the queen of the Neoh’Ahm has sent an ambassador to the Qlansie to propose an
alliance that will protect the entire sector from the military ambitions of the Olonsean Empire.
The aggressive nature of the Olonseans has long concerned both races as well as the many
humans who inhabit the Sonoran sector of space. These wild frontiers are dangerous enough for
those who live here without a warlike species constantly engaging in warfare on their very
doorsteps.
However, the Olonseans, are not without intelligence sources. They have discovered the
intentions of the Neoh’Ahm and have come up with a plan to prevent this alliance from
occurring. Major Ghaccuix of the Olonsean intelligence services approaches the travelers with an
offer of CR 40000 for a mission of some importance to the Olonsean Empire. The ambassador
must die. Before reaching the Qlansie with the queen’s proposals he must be assassinated.
Major Ghaccuix
Ambassador Droz'ats is traveling from Eravila to the Qlansie home world of Anetbi aboard a
passenger liner which is making it’s way through the sector. He will have bodyguards with him.
How many is not certain. Despite the best efforts of the Olonsean intelligence service this
information was not obtained. The ambassador boarded the liner on Eravlia where the Olonseans
are not welcome. And their spies were caught before relaying details of the boarding.
The passenger liner is called the Manticora and she is a member of the Sakahura Corporation
passenger fleet. Normally she carries a crew of up to fifty and often has a passenger list of up to
two hundred. The liner is luxurious and the passengers are often senior members of
megacorporations across the sector and beyond. The ship will be making several stops between
Eravilia and Anetbi. These stops include Uhal in the Berncale sub-sector, Zezereska in the
Loodan sub-sector and Airfa in the Elzard Sub-sector. The ship could easily be boarded at one of
these destinations. Or the ship might be boarded in space along the way. The details of this are
left to the travelers to decide.
The major does not particularly care about the methods used to achieve the result. But he cannot
use his own forces for fear of starting a war immediately with either the Qlansie or the
Neoh’Ahm or both. He needs plausible deniability. If a group of humans were to kill the
ambassador, and not his own operatives, then the alliance will not form and two Olonsean
enemies will stay divided.
The action of this adventure takes place aboard a passenger liner filled with important persons
across the sector. Wholesale slaughter of people aboard this liner is not advisable for individuals
planning to make their livelihoods in this sector. Many of the people aboard this craft have long
arms and powerful friends. Should some of them meet their end aboard this craft they will almost
certainly find out who shortened their lives and take revenge later.
Any attack aboard the craft will need to be surgical in order to prevent collateral damage among
the rich and powerful members of the sector.
The Ambassador has body guards. But there are also security operatives aboard from the
Sakahura Corporation. They do not leave their guests unprotected. Many of these operatives are
dressed in plain clothes and appear to be no different than the other passengers. Additionally
some of the crew members of the ship are armed. Pirates and raiders are not unknown in this
sector. Leaving the ship without any guards at all would be reckless and the corporation has a
reputation to protect.
The Olonsean Major offers half payment before and half after the assassination takes place. He
can be met again for full payment on the same planet where the travelers first encounter him.
And he will not renege on his offer once the deal is done assuming that no clear traces can link
him or the empire to the dirty deeds
The travelers can purchase any weapons or goods that they need for the job (limited to tech level
12) at book prices. Passage will be provided to any of the three star ports where the liner will
visit or the travelers can use their own ship to either meet the liner in space or meet the liner at
one of these star ports. How the travelers get their weapons aboard the liner without detection is
left to them.
Passage aboard the liner costs CR 20000 per person. The Olonsean Major will provide this
passage should the travelers choose to board the liner at a starport. Security at some of the
starports along the route tend to be lax about security. Rich and noble born passengers do not like
to be inconvenienced with security matters. Low passage costs CR 1000 aboard the liner.
The Manticora is a 500 ton passenger liner. She moves slowly through the sector traveling to
exotic worlds and giving wealthy passengers a view of the fantastic sights in the frontier regions
of space. She has four levels. There are some low passage passengers who are just traveling from
point A to point B. But the real money is in the passengers who have cabins aboard the ship.
The maps for the Manticora are provided at the end of this adventure. I did not select a specific
cabin for the Ambassador. I leave that for the Game Master to decide. Or you can let the dice
decide. Instead I am going to provide a list of random passengers (and parties) that might be
encountered in any of the cabins or at any of the tables in the dining hall.
In addition to the three levels of the Manticora there are two lifeboats attached to the deck one of
the passenger liner. These can only be reached from air locks on the that deck. Should an
emergency take place passengers will be ushered to that level in order to evacuate. These
lifeboats are the equivalent of an unarmed pinnace. Travelers might wish to steal one of these life
boats as an alternate escape route.
This is the highest deck of the Manticora. There are four areas on this level. This area is primarily
for low passage and for baggage and cargo.
Stairs lead from the other levels to this area on Deck One. Tables are set up here for the crew
members to dine away from the passengers of the liner. A small kitchenette is set up for cooking
duties. Small refrigeration units here store food for the crew. Naturally the food is not as
extravagant as that enjoyed by the high paying passengers.
2. Baggage area
Many of the passengers have baggage with them which is stored in this area. While some of the
passengers are just enjoying a pleasant cruise among the stars others are traveling to other parts
of the sector and have greater baggage needs.
3. Low Passage
Passengers who need to travel a great distance but cannot afford to travel in style may secure a
spot in this area of the ship. Several stasis tubes are kept here for low passage customers. These
tubes are safe for long distance travel and have been in use for thousands of years.
4. Cargo Bay
Cargo is a profitable side business of the cruise liner. This bay is often full with goods being
taken from various points in the sector. The current load aboard the liner includes exotic foods
and machine parts.
Deck Level Two is the crew living quarters for the ship. Crew members will be encountered in
all areas of the ship, of course, but few passengers wander onto this deck. Crew members are
discouraged from actively fraternizing with passengers beyond their normal duties.
2. Passageway
At all hours of the night and day crew members can be seen coming and going in this
passageway.
3. Medical Bay
The Ship’s Doctor can usually be found here. If not he can be quickly summoned here in the
event of an emergency. He is an excellent surgeon and can be relied upon for most medical
matters. The medical bay is well equipped with the latest devices for medical treatment.

He is not armed and will never be encountered on the other levels of the ship.
4. Bridge
The ship generally needs no pilot at the wheel at all times. But one is always on the bridge at any
moment of the day or night. Access to the bridge is limited to those with a blue crew card. It must
be passed by the white disk near the doorway. Only the pilots and navigators and captain have
access to such a card.
The bridge has several viewing windows. There are two pilot stations with comfortable chairs.
There is a navigation station here as well. A computer terminal is also present.
There will always be a pilot and navigator on duty on the bridge. Such characters can be chosen
from the following lists:
Pilots
Navigators
All pilots and navigators are armed while on duty. Each carries a body pistol while on the bridge
to repel hijackers and pirates.
5. Ship’s Computer
The manticora has a Model/3 computer which manages the ship’s navigation. As the ship has no
external weaponry there is no need for weapon or targeting programs. The computer is attended
day and night by a computer technician or operator who serves also as a guard to prevent
sabotage.

This is the crew quarters. There are several bunk beds in this area and at any time there will be 2-
12 members of the crew here which you can determine randomly from the tables at the end of
this adventure.
7. Crew Bathrooms
8. Engineering
The Jump Drive and Maneuver Drive are located here along with fuel cells. Computer stations
and consoles for the engineers line the walls. At any time there will be 1-3 engineers (1D6/2) on
duty here. All are armed with body pistols to repel boarders or pirates or hijackers.
Engineers
This is the passenger deck for the Manticora. Passengers rarely venture into the other areas of the
ships although they are welcome to should they choose to do so. Most of the passengers are
affluent and have little interest in seeing how the crew lives or operates the ship.
1. Stairs
2. Kitchen
Guests aboard the Manticora enjoy fine dining among the stars. Some of the finest chefs across
the Sonora Sector can be found aboard this and other ships in the cruise line. Fine meats and
other components for gourmet meals can be found here or in storage nearby. There will always
be at least one chef here. None of the chefs will be armed with anything more than a meat
cleaver.

3. Dining Room
At most times of the day 2-12 (2D6) passengers will be found here playing cards or just enjoying
a drink among friends. At meal times there will be 6-36 (6D6) passengers here eating. Use the
passenger tables at the end of the adventure to determine passengers randomly if needed.
At meal times 2-7 waiters and waitresses will be on duty in this area (1D6+1). At non peak times
only one will be present. Use the waiter table at the end of the adventure for determination of
waiters randomly.
4. Passenger Lounge
This area has many lounge chairs set up for the enjoyment of the passengers. There is a large
clear viewing bubble at the nose of the ship which can be turned opaque and used as a movie
screen. Drinks are served here and there is always at least one waiter on duty here. At any time
there will be 2-12 (2D6) passengers here.
