Worksheet: Representing Real-Life Situations Using Rational Functions
Instructions: For each of the following scenarios, write a rational function that
represents the situation. Simplify the function if possible.
1. Car Rental Cost
A car rental company charges a flat fee of ₱ 1,000 plus ₱ 15 per kilometer
driven. Write a rational function that represents the average cost per kilometer,
C (k ), if you drive k kilometers.
2. Mixing Chemicals
A chemist needs to dilute 100 ml of a 50 % solution of acid with pure water to
achieve a solution that is x % acid. Write a rational function that represents the
amount of acid per unit volume after adding w ml of water.
3. Work and Time
Two people, Maria and Juan, are working together to paint a house. Maria
can paint the house in 8 hours, while Juan can paint the house in 6 hours. Write a
rational function that represents the time, T , it will take for them to paint the
house together.
4. Cellphone Battery Life
The battery life of a cellphone decreases as more applications are used. If
one app uses 10 % of the battery life every hour, and the phone starts with 100 %
battery, write a rational function that represents the battery percentage remaining
after using the app for t hours.
5. Supply and Demand
The demand for a product decreases as its price increases. If the demand,
D( p), for a product can be modeled by the rational function D ( p )= , where p is
500
the price in pesos, what does this function tell you about the relationship between
p +5
price and demand?

4. Work Problem
Maria can finish a task in 6 hours, while Jose can finish the same task in 9
hours. If they work together, how long will it take them to complete the task? Use a
rational equation to model this situation.
5. Distance Problem
Two cars are driving towards each other. Car A travels at 60 km/h , and Car B
travels at 80 km/h . If they are initially 280 km apart, after how many hours will they
meet? Use a rational equation to model and solve this.

4. Inequality Involving a Work Problem
John can complete a task in 5 hours, while Maria can complete the same task
in 3 hours. If John works for t hours and Maria helps for t−1hours, write a rational
inequality that shows how long t must be in order for the task to be completed within
2hours. Solve for t .
5. Inequality Involving Distance and Speed
A truck is traveling at 70 km/h , and a car is traveling at 90 km/h . The car is
currently 10 km behind the truck. Write a rational inequality that represents when the
car will overtake the truck within 1 hour , and solve for the timet .
Bonus Question:

Worksheet: Representing Real-Life Situations Using Functions
Instructions: For each scenario below, write a function or piecewise function that
models the situation. Simplify your expressions where possible.
1. Cell Phone Plan
A mobile service provider charges ₱ 500 per month for up to 5 GB of data. Any
data used beyond 5 GB costs an additional ₱ 50 per GB. Write a piecewise function
that represents the total monthly cost C (x) of the plan, where x is the number of
gigabytes of data used.
2. Taxi Fare
A taxi company charges a base fare of ₱ 40, plus ₱ 15 for every kilometer
traveled. Write a function T (x) that represents the total fare, where x is the number
of kilometers traveled.
3. Income Tax
A country’s income tax system charges 10 % on the first ₱ 50,000 of income,
15 % on income between ₱ 50,001 and ₱ 100,000 , and 20 % on income over ₱ 100,000 .
Write a piecewise function that models the total tax T (x) owed on an income of x
pesos.
4. Hourly Wage with Overtime
An employee is paid ₱ 200 per hour for regular hours up to 40 hours a week.
Any overtime hours (more than 40 hours) are paid at ₱ 300 per hour. Write a
piecewise function that represents the weekly wage W ( h) as a function of the
number of hours worked h .
5. Parking Garage Fee
A parking garage charges ₱ 30 for the first hour, ₱ 20 per hour for the next 3
hours, and ₱10 per hour for any time beyond 4 hours. Write a piecewise function
that gives the total cost C (t) as a function of time t (in hours) spent in the garage.
