SECTION A – Reading Skills ( 6 marks )

Q1) Read the given Case based passage regarding Physical Exercises carefully and answer the questions that follow.

Physical exercises and competitive sports especially running, jumping and throwing are called athletics. Athletics events have
been popular in all ages. They were a main part of old Olympic Games held in Greece from 776 BC.
Today running, jumping and throwing events called ‘track-and-field’ athletics hold a high position in the world of sport. Also,
sprinting events are run over distances of 100 and 200 metre. Races over one mile can be classed as long-distance events. The
Long-distance races usually run over 5,000 and 10,000. A 3,000 metre steeplechase race is run over a track with 28 hurdles or
7 water jumps. The main hurdle events are the 100-metre race over high hurdles and the 400metre race over. Even women run
100 metres over 84 cm hurdles and 200 metres over 74 cm hurdles. The most popular relay races are the 4 × 100 metres.
Field events include high and long jumping, the triple jump, pole-vault, throwing a discus, javelin, shot and hammer. Almost
all high jumpers now use the flop method in which the jumper twists its body after take-off and goes over the bar backwards.
In pole vaulting, the pole is of flexible glass fibre and about 4.5 metres long.
Two of the most testing athletic event are the decathlon and heptathlon. The decathlon (for men) is made up of ten events that
are contested over two days. They are 100 and 400 metres, high jump, long jump, shot –put etc. The heptathlon for women
has seven events – 100-metre hurdles, high jump, shot-put, 200 metre, 800 metre, long jump and javelin.
But in the modern era, people do not involve in physical activities and hence become a victim to stress, heart failure, obesty,
respiratory diseases and other many other health related problems. Physical activities should be given a unique time for its
performance. According to scientists, this unique time is suggested as the morning time. Our body goes through a process of
special repairment and improvement during this time.
