Stages of Change

Directions: Each of the individuals below is in a different Stage of Change. Determine


which Stage of Change the individual is in so that you may effectively help them
improve his/her exercising habits. Describe how to help someone in that specific Stage
of Change. Then choose which of the four articles by the American Council on Exercise
would aid that individual the most and summarize it for them.

The Sneaker Savvy article would be most helpful for Jeff based on his current
state of change because he is getting into running and know what kind of shoes
he needs is important, so he can succeed.

● Summarize the article that would be most helpful for Jeff to read in one
full-paragraph. (2 pts)
When buying athletic shoes for exercise, making sure you buy the right pair of
shoes is super important. You can figure out what pair of shoes to buy based on
what kind of exercise you’re doing and how often. You also need to take into
consideration what fits correctly, what’s comfortable, how much it costs, and what
is suited for your foot. Make sure you are changing/getting new shoes when you
need to instead of wearing shoes that are worn out.

Felicity is overweight, but she hates to exercise. She thinks that if she eats healthy she
will lose weight without having to exercise.

I could help Felicity or someone else in this stage of change by educating them
about the negative consequences of their actions so that they will want to move
on to the next stage.

stage of change? Why? (1 pt)
The “Weight Loss: Diet vs Exercise” article would be most helpful for Felicity
based on her current stage of change because it will help her understand and
get basic knowledge of diets and exercises.
● Summarize the article that would be most helpful for Felicity to read in one
full-paragraph. (2 pts)
To lose weight, you have to incorporate a combination of a diet and exercise into
your life. To lose weight, you have to burn more calories than you consume, so
having a combination of both a diet and exercise is important, and studies
showed that this is true. Setting reasonable goals that fit you is super important.
Making sure that you are making moderate changes, setting reasonable goals,
and checking your weight are ways to stay motivated.

Tom has been thinking about exercising, but he gets overwhelmed with all the decisions
he has to make. Should he lift weights or go running? Should he workout from home or
join a gym?

and motivate him.

The Right Exercise Program For You Starts Here article would be most helpful
for Tom based on his current state of change because it will help him decide
what to do and answer any questions that he has.
● Summarize the article that would be most helpful for Tom to read in one
full-paragraph. (2 pts)
To help figure out what to do, you have to ask yourself questions such as what
do you want to accomplish. Then you start to set goals and use those goals to
figure out what exercises to do. If you’re not sure what your goal is, you can start
by getting help from a trainer. Making sure you consult with your doctor before
starting an exercise program is also very important. There are many places you
can exercise at, and you can use many different things to workout, not just
working out at the gym with expensive equipment.

Karen has been exercising regularly for nine months now. She loves the benefits she
has seen since she has started exercising, but since she is the only active person in her
family she is worried she will go back to her sedentary ways.

The Helping Your Family Become More Active article would be most helpful for
Karen based on her current stage of change because she can help educate her
family on the positive impacts on exercising and being healthy.
● Summarize the article that would be most helpful for Karen to read in one
full-paragraph. (2 pts)
Sitting down with your family and discussing why and explaining the benefits of
exercising is super important and that is a good place to start. To make
exercising fun, you could do activities and games that include physician activity
and are still fun. You could also limit screen time to encourage exercising.
