EQUIPMENT:
Equipment and systems covered by this Certificate are as follows:

The HotSense ultrasonic platform consists of a proprietary piezoelectric element, mechanically coupled to an ‘acoustic stack’ which modifies the
ultrasonic performance of the element to provide a pulse of sound that is emitted through a dielectric “ground separation layer” and then metal “delay
line”.

The delay line is threaded and subsequently welded to a metal enclosure which surrounds the dielectric, piezo, acoustic stack and the cables providing
the required mechanical strength. The cable exit can consist of either a glass to metal seal (GTMS), or the introduction of a mineral insulated metal
sheathed (MIMS) cable. Both are welded or brazed to complete the water tight seal of the transducer enclosure.

Description continued in Annex:

SPECIFIC CONDITIONS OF USE: YES as shown below:

1. The maximum voltage produced by the piezoelectric device when the Hotsense Ultrasonic Transducer is impacted with 7 J is 89 V. The voltage is
to be considered when assessing the installation as capacitors could accumulate energy from this voltage and produce dangerous discharges. The
looped capacitance (disregarding cables) shall be assessed and shall not exceed 6 nF.
2. The marked entity parameters are to be provided by an approved UPR with linear output. These parameters may be exceeded when applying an
approved UPR with output based on blocking capacitors, however the following shall be observed:

• The maximum constant or r.m.s current and power shall be limited to 120 mA and 0.84 W to ensure conformance to the temperature classification
(Group II) and maximum surface temperature (Group III) on Table 2. When conducting this assessment, the piezoelectric transducer shall be
consider as failing to a short-circuit.
• The UPR output parameters shall be approved for use with a transducer according to the HotSense ultrasonic platform.

Description Continued:
The platform cannot operate as a sensor without the receiving of a short electrical pulse from an
approved “ultrasonic pulser” or “ultrasonic pulse-receiver” (UPR) suitable to operate with the
Hotsense Ultrasonic Transducer. If this UPR does not include an output protected by an approved
infallible blocking capacitors assembly, the following entity parameters shall be observed.
Ui = 28 V
Ii = 120 mA
Pi = 0.84 W
Ci = 1.8 nF + C cables
Li = L cables

The entity parameters Ui, Ii and Pi may be exceeded if the UPR output is based on an blocking
capacitors assembly approved to operate with the HotSense ultrasonic platform features, refer to
special conditions for safe use.

A cable attached to the GTMS or the use of a MIMS cable, are then terminated to a splice, to
convert from a high temperature cable, to a low temperature cable. The splice is potted with an
epoxy rated to the environment (temperature, humidity, radiation). The termination of the second
cable type will share the following types.
1. Bare cable ends for connection to an intrinsically safe UPR
2. A suitable, keyed connector, for example a Lemo, BNC, SMA or SMB to allow connection to a
UPR.
3. An inductive coil ‘patch’ to allow wireless transmission of the pulse energy to and from the
transducer, to a hand held UPR in close proximity.

Routine Tests:
1. Piezoelectric device capacitance shall be measured for all units covered by this approval.
The measurement device shall be calibrated, the measurement frequency shall be 1 kHz. All
the results shall be recorded and traceable to the serial numbers according to requirements
from ISO/IEC 80079-34.
2. Dielectric strength test according to clause 10.3 of IEC 60079-11 shall be carried for all
units covered by this approval. The testing voltage shall be 500 Vrms applied between the
output cables and the enclosure for at least 60 seconds.
