Basic Probability

1) A box contains 5 yellow cards, 3 blue cards and 2 red cards. A card is picked at
random from the box. Find the probability of picking either a yellow card or red card.

2) In a group of 80 students, 45 of them are members of the Accounting Club, 25 of them


are members of the Geography Club and 20 of them are members of both Club. If a
student is chosen randomly from the group, what is the probability that the student is,

i) a member of both club?


ii) a member of only one of the two club?

3) A container has 15 sweets of different flavors as follows:

5 orange 3 strawberry
4 lemon 3 mint

If a sweet is picked up at random from the container, find the probability that is,
a) orange or lemon
b) lemon or strawberry or mint

4) A fair coin is tossed twice. Determine the probability of getting tail in both tosses.

5) A bag contains 4 red balls, 2 yellow balls and 6 white balls. A ball is drawn at random
from the bag. Find the probability that is a white ball and not a red ball.

6) A bag contains 4 white balls, 3 red balls and 2 yellow balls. A ball is drawn at random
from the bag. Find the probability that the ball chosen is either red or white.

7) A bag contains 5 red marbles, 7 yellow marbles and 3 white marbles. A marble is picked
at random from the bag. Find the probability that is
i) either red or yellow
ii) either red or white or yellow
