2. Define Mutually Exclusive Event.

3. What are the different types of random variables?

4. Write a probability distribution of discrete random

variable.

5. Write any two properties of characteristic

function.

6. State the Chebychev’s Inequality.

7. Define Correlation.

8. Write any two properties of correlation coefficient.

SECTION B — (5 × 7 = 35 marks)

Answer ALL the questions.

11. (a) A bag contains 4 white and 6 black balls.

Two balls are drawn at random. What is the
probability that (i) both are white (ii) both
are black (iii) one white and one black ball.

Or

(b) A company has three machines A, B, C which

produces 25%, 35% and 40% of the products
respectively. Their respective percentage of
defectives is 5, 4 and 2. One product is
chosen at random and found to be defective.
What is the probability that it has been
produced by machine A?

P(x) : a 3a 5a 7a 9a 11a 13a 15a 17a

(i) Find a

(ii) Find P (X < 3)

(iii) Find P (0 < X < 5)

Or
(b) Find the moment generating function
of the rectangular distribution with pdf
1
f (x ) = , a < x < b.
b−a

13. (a) Obtain the characteristic function of the

Binomial distribution.

Or
(b) A random variable X has the density
function e − x , (0 ≤ x < ∞ ). Use Chebychev’s
inequality to obtain a lower bound to the
probability of the inequality − 1 ≤ X ≤ 3 and
compare it with the actual value.

bulbs are defective e −3 = 0.0498 .

Or

(b) A Poisson distribution has a double mode at

balls are drawn at a time. Find the probability for
the first drawn to give 4 white and the second to
give 4 block balls in each of the following cases:
(a) The balls are replaced before the second draw,
(b) The balls are not replaced before the second
draw.
