1. Device Description

Water baths are to maintain the temperature of samples in test tubes or other vessels. In case of using flat
covers, e. g. round bottom flasks can be inserted in the bath openings for the exhaust of steam. The
accessories offered facilitates work and expands the device’s application. The water baths guarantee a gentle
heating of the property, the temperature of which should be maintained, and keep the temperature adjusted
on a constant level.
Please find the instruction manual enclosed as attachment 3.

1.1. Structure

There are water baths in different sizes, whereas the number at the end of the description always describes
the possible capacity. Every model can be run with a minimum water level. Once the heater is covered with
sufficient water ( water level above the perforated sheet ) the bath is ready for operation.
By means of the inclined cover included in the scope of delivery ( except MWB 2) the condensation water
can drain off at the cover’s edge and does not drop in the samples.
A protection against excess temperature, integrated in the heater, serves as dry-going protection and switches
off heating at 130°C. The safety interruptor returns into the initial state just after separating the heating unit
from the mains and after a decline of the temperature to a normal value.
The floor panel outlet makes an almost complete draining of the bath possible. The drain cock offered as
accessories (at WBT 50 and WBT 80 included in the scope of delivery) can be applied as standard drain
screw.

1.2. Electrical Components

The electric part of the water bath consists of three modules:

● power input with power cord, interference suppressor and mains fuses
● temperature controller and temperature sensor
● heater with integrated protection against dry-going

The temperature controller’s description will be made in point 1.4.

Please find the interconnection diagram enclosed as attachment 2.

1.3. Mechanical Components

The water baths have a double-walled vessel with interjacent insulation. The inner vessels as well as the
covers are made of high-grade steel. The casing consists of powder-coated steel sheet.
The heater and temperature controller are located within the bath vessel and covered with perforated sheet.
The inclined cover of all baths is clamped at the back side by two hinges. The cover of MWB 80 is
additionally clamped by a gas spring (release the screws only in case of closed cover).
The bath’s floor panel braces the cover plate with the casing. By releasing all screws at the floor panel, it can
be removed and the casing is connected with the vessel by the cable only.
Please find the single modules of the water bath in the parts list enclosed (attachment 3).

3
1.4. Temperature Controller

The temperature controller is a module universally applicable. It was factory-adjusted for the water baths. It
may be shifted conscientiously and by qualified personnel only.

1.4.1. Handling at fixed Control Parameters ( first Operation Level)

The handling at fixed control parameters, referred to as first operation level, simply makes the adjustment of
three temperatures and time setpoints possible.

Settings

▲ UP Key
By pressing this key, the setpoint, parameter or parameter value is increased.

▼ DOWN Key
By pressing this key, the setpoint, parameter or parameter value is reduced. At alarm, the buzzer
function is switched off by pressing this key.

 Temperature Selection
By this key, the temperature setpoint decisive for the regulation is selected. In case of a preceding
active timepiece, the controller initially commutates to temperature indication at first keypress. At
every further pressing, the adjustment skips one setpoint „S-T“. The selection of the temperature
setpoint remains the same even after switching off the mains voltage.

4
 Time Selection
The time setpoint decisive for the timer running is selected by means of this key. If the temperature
indication is active beforehand, the controller commutates to time indication at first keypress. At every
further pressing, the adjustment skips one setpoint „S-T“. The selection of the time setpoint remains
the same even after switching off the mains voltage.

 START/STOP Key
By this key, the course of the selected time setpoint is startet. Now the indication displays the
remaining time. After its expiration the buzzer resounds for 5 seconds and can be acknowledged by
the AB key. The timer course does not influence the regulation. If the key is pressed after a start for
more than 2 seconds, the timer course is discontinued again.
By means of the parameterisation, the display of the remaining time can be oppressed. Later on, the
display skips, 3 seconds after the start, from the display of the remaining time to the display of the
temperature. In this case, the light emitting diode is blinking in order to continue indicating the course.

1.4.2. Adjument of Control Parameters ( second Operation Level )

At special applications the user can change some parameters. This adjustment must be effected with greatest
responsibility, since the device might otherwise show malfunctions.

Adjustment of Control Parameters

At simulatenous pressing of the keys UP and DOWN for at least 4 seconds, you can reach a parameter list
for control parameters (starting with P0). With the key UP the list can be leafed through upwards and with
the key DOWN downwards again.
At pressing the key SET, the value of the respective parameter is indicated. At an additional pressing of the
key UP or DOWN, the value is changed. After letting off all keys, the new value is safed permanently. If no
key is pressed for more than 60 seconds, there is going to be an automatic return into the initial state.

Parameter Description

P1 do not change
Auxiliary contact 2 is not available for this type of controller.

P2 hysteresis regulating contact 1

The hysteresis can be set symmetrically or from one side at the set point (see A40, A41).
By adjusting onesidedly, the hysteresis is effective downwards at the heating contact. At symmetrical
hysteresis, half of the hysteresis’ value is effective each above and below the switching point.

heating controller, oneside hysteresis symmetrical hysteresis

The hysteresis is effective at thermostatic regulation only. It is without any effect at activated PID mode.

P3 set point S2
The auxiliary contact 2 is not available for this type of controller.

P4 lower setpoint limit

P5 upper setpoint limit
The adjustment range can be limited downwards and upwards by the set point. Thus it is avoided, that the
end user can adjust improper or dangerous set points.

P7 proportional band
The proportional band works as follows: The actuating variable is reduced from +/-100% to 0% at an
approach of the actual value to the set point. The controller’s factory setting makes them work optimally at
70°C. Should the operating temperature differ strongly, the controller can be readjusted if required.
temperature below 70°C - raise parameter P7 / temperature over 70°C - reduce parameter P7.

P8 reset time Tn, share I

P9 derivative timeTv, share D
A mere proportional-action controller keeps a lasting deviation of the actual value from the set point.
The I share is to counterbalace this offset completely.

The derivative time is an indicator for the duration necessary to balance a lasting temperature deviation from
the value of the proportional band.

If a small time Tn is adjusted, a quick readjustment is effected. In case of too little time, the system tends to
hunt. The differential action damps temperature changes.
If the derivative time Tv is adjusted too high, the damping effect would be too heavy. In case of a too high
time, the systems tends to hunt.

6
P10 cycle time TP
The cycle time is the time, in which the controller output passes one switching period, i. e. one time on and
one time off. The smaller the cycle time, the faster the regulation can be. This causes increased operating
cycles causing a quick wearout of the relay contacts in turn.

P19 key lock

The key lock allows the operating key’s lock. In the locked state, it is impossible to change the set point by
means of the keys. At the attempt of adjusting the set point in spite of the key lock, the status signal „===„
appears on the display.

P20 advice actual value sensor F1

The temperature value advised is the sum of sensor F1’s actual measured value and the actual value
correction as per P21.

P21 actual value correction

This parameter allows a correction of the actual value’s deviations caused e. g. by sensor tolerances or
extremely large sensor conductions. The measured value of the controller is increased resp. reduced by the
value adjusted.

P30 alarm limit below / P31 alarm limit above

At the alarm contact, a limit value or band alarm with adjustable hysteresis is displayed. Both at limit value
alarm and band alarm, the limit values can be relative, i. e. concurrent to the main set point, or absolute, i. e.
independent from the main set point (see A30). If only one switching point is desired at limit value alarm, a
value outside the controller’s working range can be set for the second switching point not needed. The
operating mode preferentially with absolute limit values is to be chosen.

P32: hysteresis alarm contact

The hysteresis can be symmetrically or onesidedly set on the set point (see A40 resp. A41).
During the onesided adjustment and limit value alarm, the hystereis works upwards, during the upper limit
value downwards. During the onesided adjustment and band alarm, the hystereses are set into the counter
direction, i. e. during lower limit value downwards and during upper limit value upwards. At symmetrical
hysteresis in each case half of the hysteresis’ value is active above and below the corresponding limit value.

P35 … P40 do not change

The cycle mode is not available for this type of controller.

7
1.4.3. Third Operation Level – Factory-Adjustable

On the third operation level there are parameters which can be changed after consulting the manufacturer.

The third operation level can be reached by activating the second level at first and leafing through the
parameter list to the highest parameter (P40). Afterwards the UP key is pressed for at least 10 seconds. The
status signal ”PA” appears on the display.
By pressing the UP and DOWN key subsequently for at least 4 seconds you can get to the parameter list in
the third operation level (starting with A1).
With the UP key you can leaf through the list upwards and with the DOWN key downwards again.
By pressing the SET key, the value of the regarding parameter is displayed. By pressing the UP or DOWN
key additionally, the value is adjusted. After letting off all keys, the new value is saved permanently.
If no key is pressed for more than 60 seconds, there is going to be an automatic return into the initial state. It
is recommended to switch off the controller after modifying for a short moment.

Parameter Description

The following values can change the device’s characterstics. Please exercise reasonable care while
changing:

A1 switching mode regulating contact 1

A2 switching mode regulating contact 2
The regulating contacts’ switching mode, i. e. cooling or heating, can be factory-programmed independently
from each other. Heating means that the contact decreases at approaching the predetermined set point, i. e.
the power supply is disconnected. While cooling, the contact just rises, provided that the actual value is
higher that the predetermined set point.

A3 function regulating contact 1 at sensor error

9
A4 function regulating contact 2 at sensor error
In case of sensor break or short circuit on the sensor „F1“ flashes on the display. The switching status of the
regulating contacts is, in case of an error, factory-programmable for both contacts independent from each
other. An error in the parameter memory causes a switch-off of all contacts.

A5 selection regulating contact 2 as setpoint / delta W

This parameters determines, whether the controller works with two contacts tied together (operation with
delta W) or with two contacts independently adjustable (operation with set point; see P1).

A6 characteristic of regulation at regulating contact 1

Regulating contact 1 can be parameterized as thermostat contact or as contact with PID characteristic of
regulation.

A8 display mode
This parameter determines, if the display on the first operation level is integer or if it has a resolution of 0,5
K resp. 0,1 K. On the parameter levels, all values which are not integer, are displayed with decimal place.

A9: display of unoccupied cycle time at expiry of timer

A19 parameter interlock

This parameter makes the successive locking of each parameter level possible. At locked A level, only
parameter A19 self can be changed.
In locked condition the parameters are displayed, even though a change by means of the keys is impossible.
While trying to adjust the parameters despite the key lock, ”---” appears on the display.

A30: function alarm contact

The gate alarm evaluates an upper and lower limit value (see parameter P30 and P31). Thus it can be
chosen, if the alarm is active, provided that the temperature is within these two limits, or if the alarm is
active, in case of a temperature outside the limits. In case of an error the alarm is activated independently
from this adjustment. The gate can be reversed, so that it works like a disengaging. See pictures 5 – 8 under
parameters P30/31.

A31: special functions during limit value alarm

For alarm message on the alarm contact, by means of this parameter, 4 different special functions can be
activated. In doing so modi 1-3 cannot be acknowledged. Thus the alarm message disappears just after the
error’s removal. In mode 4 the buzzer can be acknowledged.

A32: temperature display

In the initial state either the actual value or the set point is displayed.

A33: activation gate input E1 (if available)

Here the gate input’s (E1) function can be determined.

A34: activation gate input E2 (if available)

Here the gate input’s (E2) function can be determined.

A40: hysteresis mode regulating contact 1

A41: hysteresis mode regulating contact 2
Due to these parameters it can be selected if the hysteresis values for regulating contact 1 resp. 2, which are
adjustable by P2 resp. P3, are symmetrically or onesidedly set at the associated switching point.
At symmetrical hysteresis in each case half of the adjusted values, above and below the switching point, is
effective. On the heating contact the onesided hysteresis is effective downwards.

10
A56: alarm suppress after ”Netz-Ein” („Mains On“) resp. "Standby-On"
This parameter makes the deceleration of the alarm contact’s switch-on after engaging the mains voltage by
the adjusted time possible.

A60: sensor selection

This parameter provides for selecting the sensor type as far as the hardware-related pre-conditions for this
are set.

A70: constant software filter

An average determination can be executed for several measured values.
If a sensor is used, which quickly reacts on external influences, by means of the average determination, an
unflustered signal flow is ensured.

A80: temperature scale

The display can be changed between Fahrenheit and Celsius. While changing, the parameter retain their
numerical value and adjustment range. (Example: A controller with set point 0°C is changed into
Fahrenheit. The new set point is interpreted as 0°F matching -18°C).

A90: output connection K1

A91: output connection K2
The outputs are basically commutable by parameter adjustments, in order to obtain an optimal allocation
with reference to switching capacity, contact type and number of cycles.
Therefore just with these parameters an allocation of the outputs for the controller function is realized.
With adjustment 1 the output is connected with regulator circuit 1.
With adjustment 2 the output is connected with regulator circuit 2.
With adjustment 3 the output is connected with the alarm function (switching thresholds P30, P31).
