DESCRIPTION OF TASKS FOR FORMAL ASSESSMENT

Formal assessment tasks in Natural Sciences include control tests, examinations, formal practical tasks/investigations, and a project.
These tasks are marked and formally recorded by the teacher. All formal assessment tasks should be moderated for the purpose of
quality assurance and to ensure that appropriate standards are maintained.

1. Control Tests and Examinations

Control tests are written under controlled conditions within a specified period of time. Questions should assess performance at different
cognitive levels. The knowledge areas and topics that will be assessed in each control test are given in the tables below, with
approximate marks. Control tests for both grades 8 and 9 should be out of a minimum of 50 marks for the duration of at least one hour.
Examinations are similar in format to tests; the only difference is that they cover more content. The final examination for both grades 8
and 9 will count 100 marks and the duration will be two hours.

2. Practical Task

In carrying out practical tasks, learners are required to demonstrate a skill or proficiency. Learners use materials, tools, and equipment to
create, produce or do something. The teacher observes the learner demonstrate specific practical skills (e.g., measure the voltage of a
cell, use a thermometer to measure temperature, etc.). Practical tasks can be very useful for assessing how learners draw on knowledge
and values to carry out practical skills (manual and/or behavioural, e.g., safety and handling of equipment).

Any practical task should provide opportunities for learners to demonstrate the skills listed under Specific Aim 2. These may or may not
include design/plan investigations skills. However, there are some circumstances in which only some of these skills would apply and not
every skill can be assessed in every practical task. (CAPS, page 10 to 12)

Assessment of practical tasks

The assessment may be based on the end-result of the activity (the product), or the carrying-out of the activity (the process), or a
combination of both. Assessment tools for projects could be a memorandum, rubric, checklist, or a combination of the these mentioned
tools.

16
Natural Sciences Subject Guide 2024
Appx D

3. Project

Projects are tasks in which learners illustrate or apply knowledge that they have gained in class. Projects may involve aspects of
investigation and/or design. Learners may collect data to solve a problem or to understand a particular set of circumstances and/or
phenomena. In doing this, they can build models, compile reports, essays or posters and even give presentations. Learners can do
projects individually or in groups, working alone but with some support and guidance from the teacher. The teacher directs the choice of
the project, usually by providing the learner with a topic or brief for the investigation.

Assessment of projects

Teachers can assess different stages of projects separately, or the entire project. Assessment of projects should be based on the
understanding of content, application of skills and values applicable in a relevant context. Assessment tools of projects could be a
combination of rubric, memorandum, checklist, etc.

GENERAL MARKING GUIDELINES

NATURAL SCIENCES

GRADE 8 AND 9

1. NOT FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS in SECTION A FOR MCQs or MATCHING COLUMNS

Giving WORDS instead of LETTERS, penalise with one mark per question.

NOT FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS IN SECTION B

When a DESCRIPTION is given, instead of a TABLE / DIAGRAM or vice versa, penalise with one mark.

IF ONLY THE LETTER IS ASKED FOR BUT ONLY THE NAME IS GIVEN (AND VICE VERSA)
Do not credit.
2. IF MORE INFORMATION THAN MARKS ALLOCATED IS GIVEN
Only mark the FIRST answer, if ONE answer is required.
Only mark the FIRST TWO answers, if TWO answers are required, etc.
3. IF THE WHOLE PROCESS IS GIVEN WHEN ONLY A PART OF IT IS REQUIRED
Read all and credit the relevant part.
4. INCORRECT NUMBERING
If the answer fits into the correct sequence of questions but the wrong number is given, it is acceptable.
5. IF LANGUAGE USED CHANGES THE INTENDED MEANING
Do not accept.
6. SPELLING ERRORS
If recognizable (phonetically the word sounds right), accept the answer, provided it does not mean something else in Natural
Sciences or if it is out of context.
7. IF COMMON NAMES ARE GIVEN IN TERMINOLOGY
Accept, provided it was accepted in the memorandum / memo discussion.
8. IF UNITS ARE NOT GIVEN IN MEASUREMENTS
The numerical answer WITH the correct UNIT must be given, for one mark.
If a learner omits the correct measuring unit, the mark is forfeited.

23
Natural Sciences Subject Guide 2024
Appx D

General criteria for marking graphs, investigative questions/hypotheses, and tabulating differences are given in
NOTE
sections 9 - 11. These criteria can be applied in setting and assessing these question types.
However, if alternative rubrics are provided on a marking guideline, follow the instructions on the guideline.

9. MARKING CRITERIA FOR A GRAPH

Marking criteria Marks

Heading, including BOTH variables 1
Label on x-axis with a measuring unit 1
Label on y-axis with a measuring unit 1
Correct scale on x-axis 1
Correct scale on y-axis 1
Plotting of points (1 to 3 marks, depending on the difficulty) 1 to 3
Line / curve of best fit through the plotted points 1

Adapt the rubric depending on the type of graph and the graph paper provided.
10. MARKING CRITERIA FOR:
INVESTIGATIVE QUESTION / HYPOTHESIS (mostly in practical tasks) / CONCLUSION

Marking criteria Marks

Mention BOTH the independent and dependent variables 1
Clearly indicate the RELATIONSHIP between the variables 1

11. MARKING CRITERIA FOR TABULATING DIFFERENCES

Marking criteria Marks

Each corresponding difference (BOTH sides must be correct
1
and corresponding for one mark)
Table, with columns, rows, and a heading for each column 1

E.g., If TWO differences must be tabulated, the question will count THREE marks.
If THREE differences must be tabulated, the question will count FOUR marks.

24
Natural Sciences Subject Guide 2024
Appx D

12. CALCULATIONS
 Marks will be awarded for: correct formula, correct substitution(s), correct answer with unit.
 When an error is made during substitution into a correct formula, a mark will be
awarded for the correct formula and for the correct substitutions, but no further marks will be given.
 If no formula is given, but all substitutions are correct, the candidate will forfeit one mark.
 The mark for an incorrect numerical answer is forfeited.
 Final answers to all calculations, when not specified in the question, must be rounded off to TWO decimal places (this
requirement should be listed as part of the general instructions at the beginning of the question paper).
 If ONLY the final answer to a multi-step calculation is given, full marks will NOT automatically be awarded; it depends on the
instruction in the memorandum.
 Questions in which a series of calculations must be made do not necessarily always have to follow the same order. FULL
MARKS will be awarded, provided it is a valid solution to the problem. However, any calculation that will not bring the
candidate closer to the answer, will not count any marks.
13. UNITS
 Candidates will only be penalised ONCE PER QUESTION for the repeated use of an incorrect unit, or for the omission of
units.
 Units are only required in the final answer to a calculation. Do not deduct marks for incorrect units used in any substitution.
 Marks are only awarded for an answer, and not for a unit per se. Candidates will therefore forfeit the mark allocated for the
answer in each of the following situations:
 Correct answer + wrong unit
 Wrong answer + correct unit
 Correct answer + no unit
 Sl-units must be used; hours (h) not minutes, etc.
14. POSITIVE MARKING
Positive marking regarding calculations will be followed in the following cases:
 Sub-question to sub-question: When a certain variable is incorrectly calculated in one sub-question (e.g., 3.1) and needs
to be substituted into another sub-question (3.2 or 3.3), full marks are to be awarded for the subsequent sub-questions.
 A multistep question in a sub-question: If the candidate must calculate, for example, current in the first step and gets it
wrong due to a substitution error, the mark for the substitution and the final answer will be forfeited.
 Indicate positive marking: with a plus sign and an arrow.

25
Natural Sciences Subject Guide 2024
Appx D

15. NEGATIVE MARKING

 Normally an incorrect answer cannot be correctly motivated if based on a conceptual mistake. If the candidate is therefore
required to motivate in QUESTION 3.2 the answer given to QUESTION 3.1, and QUESTION 3.1 is incorrect, no marks
can be awarded for QUESTION 3.2.
 If negative marking is applied, indicate it with a negative sign and an arrow.

 NOTE TO TEACHERS: To avoid negative marking, phrase the question in such a way that learners do not have to make
a choice first, and then explain. E.g., Explain why bulb B glows brighter than bulb A.

16. MARKING OF BALANCED CHEMICAL EQUATIONS

 Marks are awarded for correct reactants, correct products, and correct balancing.
 Depending on the question and the mark allocation on the memorandum, a balanced chemical equation can count
more than 3 marks in some cases.
 An ARROW must be used. If a learner uses = instead of , penalise with one mark.
 Example:

2HCl + MgO  MgCl2 + H2O

Marking criteria Marks

Reactants; HCl and MgO 1
Products; MgCl2 and H2O 1
Balancing; coefficient of 2 in front of HCl 1

17. INDICATE ERRORS ON SCRIPTS

 Learners must be able to see where they made a mistake.
 Underline an incorrect word / misspelled word / incorrect value, when used in a sentence.
 Indicate if the answer is incomplete or if something is missing by using ˄.

26
Natural Sciences Subject Guide 2024
Appx D

18. HOW TO INDICATE MARKS

 Use a clear tick () where a mark is awarded.

 Use a clear cross (X) where an error has been made. Underline the error.
 Ticks and crosses must be clearly distinguishable.
 NO ticks or crosses across what the learner has written.
 Indicate the MARK PER SUB-QUESTION on the right-hand side of the page IN THE MARGIN; not across what the
learner has written.
 Indicate the TOTAL PER QUESTION at the top left next to the question number, e.g., Question 1, Question 2, etc.
 Indicate the total mark obtained by the learner on the front of the script and sign, with the date.
19. TEACH LEARNERS HOW TO ANSWER A QUESTION PAPER

To make marking easier:

 Teach learners to write the question number at the top of each new question, e.g., Question 1, Question 2, etc.
 Teach learners to draw a line after each question, before starting with the next question.
 Teach learners to SKIP A LINE in Section B between sub-questions, e.g., between 4.1.1 and 4.1.2.
