The 3M™ Attest™ Auto‑reader 390 is designed to incubate and automatically read 3M™
Attest™ Rapid Readout Biological Indicators 1291 for Steam at 60°C for a final fluorescence
result at 1 hour and 3M™ Attest™ Rapid Readout Biological Indicators 1292 and 1292E for
Steam at 60°C for a final fluorescent result at 3 hours. The 3M™ Attest™ Rapid Readout
Biological Indicator 1292E is not cleared for use in the United States.
The 3M™ Attest™ Auto‑reader 390 is also designed to allow for further incubation of 3M™
Attest™ Rapid Readout Biological Indicators for Steam, catalog numbers 1291 and
1292/1292E, for a visual pH color change result at 24 hours and 48 hours, respectively. In the
case of a positive control BI, a yellow color change of the growth media will appear within 24
hours for 1291 BIs and within 48 hours for 1292 BIs. In the case of a processed BI, a media
color change from purple to yellow indicates a steam sterilization process failure. A negative pH
color change result, i.e., media remains purple, can be assessed at 24 hours for 1291 BIs and
at 48 hours for 1292 BIs. This further incubation is optional and not intended for routine use.
Model 390
3M™ Attest™ Rapid Readout Biological Indicators 1294 may be further incubated for a visual
pH color change but they must be transferred to a humidified incubator to avoid media dry out.
In the case of a positive control BI, a yellow color change of the growth media will appear within
7 days. In the case of a processed BI, a media color change from blue‑green to yellow indicates
a sterilization process failure. A negative pH color change result, i.e., media remains
blue‑green, can be assessed at 7 days. This optional further incubation is not intended for
routine use but may be used for special studies.
Model 390G
The 3M™ Attest™ Auto‑reader 490 is designed to incubate and automatically read 3M™
Attest™ Super Rapid Readout Biological Indicators 1491 at 56°C for a final negative fluorescent
result at 30 minutes and 3M™ Attest™ Super Rapid Readout Biological Indicators 1492V at
56°C for a final negative fluorescent result at 1 hour.
The 3M™ Attest™ Auto‑reader 490 is also designed to allow for further incubation of 3M™
Attest™ Super Rapid Readout Biological Indicators, catalog numbers 1491 and 1492V, for a
final visual pH color change result at 24 hours and 48 hours, respectively. In the case of a
positive control BI, a yellow color change of the growth media and/or Nonwoven Material will
appear within 24 hours for 1491BIs and within 48 hours for 1492V BIs. In the case of a
processed BI, a media and/or Nonwoven material color change from purple to yellow indicates a
steam sterilization process failure. A negative pH color change result, i.e. media and Nonwoven
Material remain purple/blue, can be assessed at 24 hours for 1491 BIs and at 48 hours for
1492V BIs. This further incubation is optional and not intended for routine use.
A positive fluorescent reading or a visual pH color change indicate a steam sterilization process
failure. However, due to the high sensitivity of the fluorescent result, there is no advantage to
continuing to incubate processed 3M™ Attest™ Super Rapid Readout Biological Indicators
once the fluorescent result has been documented.
Model 490
The 3M™ Attest™ Auto‑reader 490H is designed to incubate and automatically read 3M™
Attest™ Rapid Readout Biological Indicators 1295 at 60°C for a final fluorescent result at 4
hours.
The 3M™ Attest™ Auto‑reader 490H is also designed to allow for further incubation of positive
control 3M™ Attest™ Rapid Readout Biological Indicators 1295 for a final positive visual pH
color change result at 24 hours. It is recommended that processed BIs be transferred to a
humidified incubator for further incubation. A final negative visual pH color change result is
assessed after 7 days. This further incubation is optional and not intended for routine use.
A positive fluorescent reading or a positive visual pH color change result indicates a sterilization
process failure. However, due to the high sensitivity of the fluorescent result, there is no
advantage to continuing to incubate processed 3M™ Attest™ Rapid Readout Biological
Indicators 1295 once the fluorescent result has been documented.

Fluorescence Detection
The figure below shows an Auto-reader optical path cross section and the related
electrical circuit functional blocks used to process the optical signals.
The excitation UV LED light transmits through the glass excitation filter onto the
biological indicator to excite the fluorophore. Emission light from the excited
fluorophore is transmitted through both the glass and gel emission filters and
absorbed by the photodiode sensor. The emission filters prevent non-emission light
from reaching the photodiode sensor.

The 3M MTS Software is a desktop suite of tools that are packaged together to perform
troubleshooting, calibration and verification along with setting basic device parameters for the
3M Attest™ Auto-readers. It is used by 3M Manufacturing and Service organizations to perform
calibrations and verify Auto-reader functionality. The data output from the “Verify” test
sequence is used by service personnel to complete a “Calibration Certificate” for the 3M
Attest™ Auto-readers.
IMPORTANT: At the completion of the 3M Attest™ Auto-reader repair, return the unit in
the same condition as received or as the customer has requested.
The MTS test suite is comprised of software tools to: a) Set file path preferences; b) Manage
fluorescent standards; c) Upgrade the Auto-reader device firmware and webpage binary
images; d) Select test function modes to perform pre-preprogrammed test sequences. Each of
these components are detailed below.
Fluorescent Standards
Management
Firmware/Webpage Upgrades
Function Modes
10.2.2.1. File Path Preferences – Enables the user to define the file path locations for test data,
serial number generation and webpages.
10.2.2.3. Firmware and Webpage Upgrades – A tool to upgrade the Auto-reader device
firmware and webpage binary images. The firmware and webpage software is
validated against its original MD5 hash code, just prior to upload, to ensure they have
not been corrupted.
(Note: The “Firmware Tool” And “Upload Webpage Tool” remain grayed out until an
Auto-reader is “connected”.)
10.2.2.4. Function Mode – Enables the user to select one of four function modes:
a) Manufacturing; b) Verify; c) Single Test; and, d) Serial Number.
A validated XML data file for the “Manufacturing” and “Verify” modes is created and saved in
the “c:\MTS\Tests” folder after the test is complete. The XML data file name convention is
as follows:
If a “Calibration Certificate” for the 3M Attest™ Auto-reader is required, the data file for a
“Verify” test sequence that passed should be used as the data source to complete the
certificate (e.g. Attest_303033_10_09_2014_15_24_17_VER_Pass.xml).
NOTE: XML data files contain 3M CONFIDENTIAL information and shall not be given
to the customer or distributed in any manner.
10.2.2.4.1. Manufacturing – A test suite wizard that performs all “Calibration” and
“Verification” tests except for setting device time, serial number, and MAC
Address. All BI records are erased upon successful completion. In general, this
test should only be used by manufacturing.
10.2.2.4.2. Verify – A test suite wizard that performs all “Verification” tests.
10.2.2.4.3. Single Test – A user selectable test list that allows users to pick one or more
individual “Calibration” and “Verification” tests to troubleshoot a problem.
Selected tests are performed in sequence. MTS directs control back to the Main
Screen at the completion of the selected tests.
10.2.2.4.4. Serial Number – Sets the device time based upon PC time, assigns a unique
serial number, and assigns a MAC Address. The “manual mode” (versus the
“automatic mode”) should be used by service organizations. Only use this
function after the “Main Controller Board” has been replaced so that the original
serial number is assigned to the Auto-reader.

Figure 10.17 - Calibration Standard Sets
10.4.1.1. Fluorescent standards have unique assigned VEM readings for each calibration
standard that is printed on the label affixed to the standard. Standards should be
stored between 0°C and 29°C and not subjected to direct sunlight while not in use.
10.4.1.2. Fluorescent standards should be visually inspected prior to every use to ensure
that no dust or debris has collected in the mask area. If dust or debris has
collected, clean the affected areas by gently blowing the assemblies with clean/oil-
free compressed air. After cleaning, inspect mask and fluorescent material for
tightness and damage. DO NOT USE ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL ON MASK AREA.
10.4.1.3. Fluorescent standards should be gently shaken, prior to use, to ensure that no
rattling can be heard. A rattle indicates that the Mask/Fluorescent
Material/Retainer clip has come loose. In the event that a rattle is audible,
discontinue use of fluorescent standard.
10.4.1.4. It is critical to fully insert the calibration standards into the Auto-reader wells under
test. Failure to do so could result in incorrect calibration and failure during the
“VEM Sensitivity Verification” step.
10.4.1.5. A three minute enforced wait time occurs after inserting the fluorescent standards
into the Auto-reader wells under test prior to calibration to allow time for the
incubator block to recover to the block temperature set point.
