9. A hiker stands on the edge of a cliff 490 m above the ground and throws a stone
horizontally with an initial speed of 15 m s-1. Neglecting air resistance, find the time
taken by the stone to reach the ground, and the speed with which it hits the ground.
Take g = 9.8 ms-2. [Ans. 10 s, 99.1 m s-1]
10. A projectile is thrown horizontally from the top of a tower and strikes the ground
after 3 second at an angle of 45° with the horizontal. Find the height of the tower and
the speed with which the body was projected. Given = 9.8 m s-2.
(iii) the velocity with which the projectile hits the ground.

PROBLEMS ON PROJECTILE MOTION [HORIZONTAL AND OBLIQUE]
12. Two paper screens A and B are separated by a distance of 100 m. A bullet pierces
A and then B. The hole in B is 10 cm below the hole in A. If the bullet is travelling
horizontally at the time of hitting the screen A, calculate the velocity of the bullet
when it hits the screen A. Neglect the resistance of paper and air.
13. A projectile thrown from a horizontal plane reaches back the plane after covering
a horizontal distance of 40 m. If the horizontal velocity of the projectile is 10 m s-1,
then what is its initial vertical velocity? Given: g = 10 m s-2. [Ans. 20 m s-1]
14. A hose lying on the ground shoots a stream of water upwards at an angle of 40°
to the horizontal. The speed of water is 20 m s-1 as it leaves the hose. How high up
will it strike a wall which is 8 m away? [Ans. 5.4 m]
15. Prove that the maximum horizontal range is four times the maximum height
attained by the projectile when fired at an inclination so as to have the maximum
horizontal range.

16. Prove that a gun will shoot three times as high when its angle of elevation is 60°
as when it is 30°, but will carry the same horizontal distance.
17. A bullet is fired with a velocity of 10 m s-1 in a direction making an angle of 30°
with the vertical. Calculate its time of flight and the maximum height reached by it.
[Ans. 1.8 s, 3.8 m]
18. A shell is fired with a speed of 30 m s-1at an angle of 37° with the horizontal.
After 1second, the shell is moving at an angle Ø with the horizontal. Calculate Ø.
Given: Sin370 = 0.6 [Ans:18.90]
19. A stone is thrown from the top of a tower with velocity 16 m s-1at an angle of 30°
with the horizontal. The stone takes 4 second to hit the ground. Calculate the height
of the tower and the range of stone. [Ans. 46.4 m, 55.4 m]

20. The maximum vertical height of a projectile is 10 m. If the magnitude of the initial
velocity is 28 m s-1, what is the direction of the initial velocity? Given: g = 9.8 m s-2.
[Ans. 30°]
21. A bullet is fired at an angle of 30° to the horizontal with a velocity of 196 m s-1.
Calculate the total time of flight, horizontal range and maximum height attained.
