Ball-tampering scandal that shocked world cricket after players exposed during test match
The Australian cricket team were involved in a huge ball-tampering scandal that shocked world sport in
2018.
Sandpaper gate was the name given to the Australian ball-tampering scandal.
During a test match against South Africa in March 2018, the Australian cricket team were exposed for
rubbing the ball with a piece of sandpaper.
Sandpaper helps to rough up one side of the ball which in turn creates more swing on the delivery when
bowling.
The three players involved were captain Steve Smith, vice-captain David Warner and bowler Cameron
Bancroft.
After admitting to the tampering, Smith and Warner were quickly removed from their captaincy roles before
being suspended and sent home from South Africa alongside Bancroft.
All of the players appeared in a press conference and showed their clear emotions with Smith crying as he
apologised.
“To fans of cricket all over the world and to all Australians who are disappointed and angry: I’m sorry,” he
said.
