ABSTRACT

Digital Libraries are the systems providing users the organized

information access to repository of information and services at
knowledge base. Ultimately, it is the demand for high quality content
and ease of access and use that will drive the initiation and development
of digital libraries. The major objectives and principles of digital library
have been narrated with applied knowledge system at TISS library.
The functional components of the Digital Library have been presented
as a model for the information services of the library. The digitization
activities and procedures are also discussed here.
CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
Libraries form a vital part of the world's systems of education and information
storage and retrieval. They make available- through books, films, recordings, and
other media- Knowledge that has been accumulated through the ages. People in
all walks of life- including students, teachers, business executives, government
officials, scholars, and scientists- use library resources for their research. Large
number of people also turn to library to satisfy a desire for knowledge or to obtain
material for some kind of leisure-time activity. In addition, many people enjoy
book discussions, and other activities that are provided by their Libraries.

The Library of the future will be less a place where information is kept on a portal
through which students and faculty will access the vast information resources of
the world. The Library of the future will be about access and knowledge-
management, not about ownership. The main products of the library and
information professionals in the 21 century will be introduction of the digital
Libraries and the archives.

Digital libraries can vary immensely in size and scope, and can be maintained by
individuals, organizations, or affiliated with established physical library buildings
or institutions, or with academic institutions. The electronic content may be stored
locally, or accessed remotely via computer networks. An electronic library is a
type of information retrieval system.

A Digital library (also referred to as electronic library or digital repository) is a

focused collection of digital objects that can include text, visual material, audio
material, video material, stored as electronic media formats (as opposed to print,
micro form, or other media), along with means for organizing, storing, and
retrieving the files and media contained in the library collection.
 Purposes & need of Digital Library

Success of the digital libraries in developed countries has drawn the attention
towards the digital library. While going for a digital library many questions come
to our mind such as why we are digitizing? Will it fulfill our needs & many other
questions? Answers of some of these are mentioned below: -

 To improve the quality & quantity of library services

 To promote the economical and efficient delivery of information.
 To encourage the resource sharing
 To make lifelong depository
 For the sake of democracy, education etc.
 For the sake of "Good Life".
 To encourage the communication & collaboration between and among
government, research, academic and special libraries
 Open access to users
 Knowledge dissemination
 To put the digital material online. So, these materials can be found and used
easily.
 To make digital material more broadly, quickly and efficiently accessible
 Portability of documents
 Accessible on World Wide Web (www)
 Main components of Digital Library

Digital Library is the collection of the multimedia objects which are linked
together and are available online for use and these digital objects form a digital
library.

Main Components of a digital library

1. Information in text on paper

2. Video pictures/clippings
3. Graphics
4. Images
5. Photographs
6. Audio (Sound)
7. Information in Digital form

In simple words we can say that Digital Libraries are based on Multimedia
Technology. Therefore some expert calls it High Speed Network of Multimedia
Systems.

 Objective
1. To collect, organize & collate print & digital information & disseminate at
the point of care and for future use.
2. To provide seamless access to information
3. To act as gateway to digital and electronic information
4. To develop in to a single access point library.
5. To create and update a comprehensive database of Indian Literature in the
field of cancer.
 Depository for the future
Digital library would be depository for the future and could be easily available
and accessible for a very long period. These libraries could be preserved for
heritage.

There are some organization who are deeply involved in making Digital
depository for the future. V. V Giri National Labour Institute, Noida, is one of
them which took initiative towards making future depository. This institute has
been developing a Digital Archives on Indian Labour in a very small hall.

They have started digitization of the imported documents such as reports, evidence
and documents, related to the Indian Labour both published or unpublished.
 Remote access to expensive and rare material
(World Library)
Digital library makes its digital objects and services accessible remotely
through different variety of networks such as intranet (for limited number of
users) or internet (unlimited users) and which are easily accessible.
Simultaneously large number of people can access it.

1. No Geographic barrier: - Digital library can be accessed from any part of

the world.
2. Better conservation: - Information in digital form can be used or preserved
for a long period (long term access).
3. Digital Library As a meeting place: - Digital library can act as a meeting

place for the people of the similar interest and they can share their views,
experiences and ideas.
CHAPTER 2

 Conclusion:
Digital Library is surely a landmark and indispensable. . It has been playing
important role in the development of the civilized society. In this context, we
can take the examples of the developed countries where .information is easily
accessible and reachable. The emerging trend of digital libraries has made
information 24 hours available. The accessibility and availability of the
information has developed more democratic society. And providing great
opportunity for the development of more economical, transparent and user
driven library
