You may find that laws are enforced differently in Australia than they are in your home country.
You must obey this country’s laws and respect its customs. It is important that you understand
the laws, rules, and customs that you may encounter.

Employment
If you are on a student visa, the maximum
that you are permitted to work is 40 hours
per two-week period during the semester.
However, we recommend you work for no
more than 8 hours per week as it is extremely
important that you do not let any work or job
interfere with your studies.
Be aware that there are laws in Australia that
employers must adhere to with respect to
hiring you as an employee. These include
worker safety, tax payments and certain
leave entitlements. There are also equal
opportunity laws that protect employees from
discrimination based on race, religion, age,
gender, marital status or sexual preference or
disability. Additionally, most workplaces have
strict harassment policies that all staff must
adhere to.
You must be paid an award rate (a minimum
rate dependent on your age, expertise and
area of work). Visit safework.sa.gov.au to
check your rights as an employee.
There are certain jobs that you are not legally
permitted to do until you are 18 years of age,
e.g. working in premises licensed to serve
alcoholic beverages.
The University’s Career Hub gives you access
to resources and workshops on topics such as
resumes, cover letters, interview skills and
more. See careerhub.adelaide.edu.au
