Grade Level Standard Learners will understand and appreciate “Amor propio” or
“Pagmamahal sa sarili” and its harmonious connection with the
Filipino culture and its people. Learners will display the
understanding by explaining Amor propio, Identifying its
importance and practices.

What is Amor propio?
Definition: it means regard for oneself.
Origin: The word “Amor propio” originated from spanish language. It translates to the
english word “self-love” or “self esteem”
Amor propio as a Filipino Value
“ Amor propio” or “Pagmamahal sa sarili” refers to regard for oneself. It is about having a
sense of “self worth” and pride, by not allowing oneself to be belittled or humiliated by
others. Amor propio reciprocates the self-love, self-respect, dignity and pride, by allowing
ourselves to enjoy and love the life we have.
In Filipino culture Amor propio is an important core value, it encourage us to accept who we
truly are and have a positive image of ourselves.
Examples:
• Not letting others degrade or say something bad about you.
• Treating ourselves something good after doing a good job.
Importance of Amor Propio
• Builds Respect and Harmony within ourselves.
• When we respect ourselves, it’s easier for other to respect us as well.
• Having strong sense of identity
