Domestic Responsibility and Perceived Performance Satisfaction
Introduction
In Filipino households, shared responsibilities and cooperation are highly valued,
particularly when it comes to domestic work. Domestic responsibilities are tasks
performed inside a household to make sure that everyone's basic demands are satisfied,
including cooking, cleaning, and looking after young children, elderly relatives, and other
dependent family members (European Institute for Gender Equality, n. d.). In other
countries, particularly the USA, women still handle main household chores (Brenan,
2020). Oxfam Philippines' Time to Care report (2020) highlights a significant gender gap
in unpaid care and domestic work. Globally, females spend up to 11 hours per day on
these tasks, compared to three to four hours for males. The last Brazilian Institute of
Geography and Statistics survey (2015) found that 37.6% of Brazilian males and 68.5%
of Brazilian females aged from 10 to 15 years old reported the performance of household
chores. While Wichmann et al. (2018) stated that females are more likely than males to
encounter at least one academic failure as a result of having more domestic
responsibilities, Pestana et al. (2016) found the opposite in their research. The authors
discovered that teenagers who work with family members to do household duties perform
better in school than those who do not.
Furthermore, Emmanuel (2015) claimed that females’ performance in secondary
schools is negatively influenced as a result of more domestic duties than males. In the
Philippines, males are also assigned to perform household chores which backs up
Joudane’s (2024) statement that the country has improved slightly in gender equality on
domestic duties. However, when males perform household duties, they feel that they are
performing a task for which they are not responsible. Students' performance satisfaction
in school settings can vary significantly depending on the level of responsibility they
acquire at home. Hamid (2023) defined perceived performance satisfaction in academic
contexts as an individual's internal assessment of their abilities or skills. Perceived
performance is drawn to justify the students' satisfaction with their academics (Ganesh &
Haslinda, 2019).
The Philippines implemented the ‘K–12 curriculum’ in the country that covers
kindergarten to 12 years of the basic form of education. It is used to provide sufficient
time to learn and master the skills and knowledge of the global standard of education
(K12 Philippines, 2015). Nevertheless, due to the domestic responsibility that has been
given to the students, it affects their daily lives. Students are also children, youths with
their own responsibilities in life. Children have their own responsibility—whether self-care
or family care. Academic or domestic, these chores help them develop persistence and
resilience. In addition, a study of almost 10,000 children indicated that children who did
regular chores had better grades at school and increased self-satisfaction (Ausburn,
2023).
There is a wealth of research on domestic responsibilities among women and
men worldwide, but there is significantly less understanding of how Filipino adolescents'
household chores affect their performance satisfaction in school, particularly within the
San Jose National High School.
The researchers observed that one of the possible factors contributing to
students' performance satisfaction is domestic responsibility. Several studies have shown
that household tasks have a major impact on how well students do in school. Being a
student comes with being responsible with personal, family, and as a student (Mani,
2022). Initial examination suggests that there is a statistically significant relationship
between student responsibility and performance satisfaction. Previous studies indicate
that students who exhibit levels of responsibility as seen through factors like dedication,
time management, and personal discipline tend to report greater satisfaction with their
academic achievements and overall education. Further investigation reveals that different
aspects of responsibility have varying impacts on performance satisfaction. Among these
dimensions of educational responsibility encompasses work, task compliance, and other
academic qualities that appear to be closely linked to satisfaction levels.
The study aims to discover if there is a relationship between domestic
responsibility and perceived performance satisfaction among Grade 12 SHS students at
San Jose National High School. The study will allow the students to assess and consider
how their domestic responsibilities affect their performance satisfaction in school. The
students will be able to identify internal factors that impact them and create effective
coping strategies. By comparing students with different levels of responsibility, the
researchers can determine if there is a relationship between domestic responsibility and
perceived performance satisfaction. Moreover, the study will contribute to the body of
knowledge already known in the field, which should help future researchers address the
problem that has been observed.
Statement of the Problem
The researchers came up with four problem statements related to the investigation. Which
are:
1. What is the domestic responsibility of Grade 12 students?
2. What is the perceived performance satisfaction of Grade 12 students?
3. Is there a significant difference between the domestic responsibility and perceived
performance satisfaction of Grade 12 students?
4. Based on the results of the study, what coping strategies can be recommended?
