WEEKLY LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET
Research I, Quarter 2, Week 1

IDENTIFYING VARIABLES IN A PROBLEM

Learning Competencies:

1. Identify variables in a problem (SSP_RS7-IPS-II-h9)

2. Distinguish variables depending on their uses in planning a simple science
experiment (SSP_RS7-IPS-II-h-i-10)

Specific Learning Objectives:

1. Describe the different types of variables;

2. Identify the different types of variables in a given science experiment; and
3. Distinguish variables depending on their uses in planning a simple science
experiment.

Time Allotment: 6 hours

Key Concepts

You probably have experienced doing a science experiment when you were in elementary
grades. Upon doing such, you have used materials for such purpose. The materials that you
used are among those variables in an experiment. A variable is a characteristic, number or
quantity that is being manipulated or changed during a scientific investigation when
performed under specific or varying situations.

It can be a:

 Dependent variable -the variable thought to be changed or influenced by

independent variable
-also known as the responding variable
-outcome variable measured in each subject, which may be
influenced by manipulation of the independent variable

 Independent variable -the variable that is manipulated or altered during experiment

-also known as the manipulating variable

 Extraneous variable -the variable that is not being investigated

-an undesirable variable that may cause error in the result of
the experiment

 Controlled variable -the variable that remains constant throughout the experiment,

thereby not being “variable” at all

For example, in a simple science experiment, Amber, a Grade 7 learner, wanted to check the
effect of salt as fertilizer in the growth of tomato plants. She prepared 12 uniformly sized pots
and 12 uniformly sized tomato seedlings from a nursery. She also placed equal amount of one
kilogram loam soil in each pot. She treated all pots with five grams of organic fertilizer and
watered all pots with equal amount of water and separated them in four groups. Then, Amber
manipulated the concentration of salt which she used as the fertilizer in her investigation. For
set up A, she put 75% salt and 25% water, for set up B she put 50% salt and 50% water, for
set up C she put 25% salt and 75% water, and for set up D 100% water. For the set up not to
be affected by extraneous variables like human urine and rain, she labeled it with “FOR
EXPERIMENT AND OBSERVATION, DO NOT MEDDLE”.

In this experiment, the dependent variable is the height of tomato plants because it is
dependent to the amount of salt the researcher applied to every set-up. Moreover, the
independent variable is the amount of salt applied to the set up because it is what the
researcher is manipulating. The extraneous variables could be the insects that will feed on
the plants, the rain, and any undesirable variable that may affect the growth of tomato plants.

ACTIVITIES

Activity 1. I am a Variable!
Objective: Describe the different types of variables
What you need: Pen and Paper
What to do: Describe the different types of variables using the concept map below. Write
your answer on a separate sheet of paper.

Activity 2. Types of Variables

Objective: Identify and distinguish variables depending on their uses in planning a simple
science experiment
What you need: Pen and paper
What to do: Identify the type of variables in each simple science research and then
distinguish their uses in planning a simple science experiment.

Situation:

You wanted to check the effect of sunlight in the growth of a corn plant. Using ten
(10) same size pots, you planted each pot with same size corn seeds and put all pots with five
(5) grams of organic fertilizer and same amount of loam soil. After all the preparation has
been made you grouped the plants into two groups and placed the first five pots in a direct
sunlight, and the second grouped under a shady tree. With the same amount of water, you
watered all plants every day and recorded the height of each plant. On the last and final day
of your science research, you saw a dog urinating in the set-up you placed under the direct
sunlight.

Guide Questions:

1. What is the dependent variable in this simple science research?

2. What is the independent variable?
3. What is the extraneous variable in this set-up?
4. Aside from your answers in item number 3, what could be the other possible
extraneous variables in the experimental set-up? (Give at least two)
5. What is the use of sunlight in this experimental set-up?
6. If you were to replace sunlight as the independent variable, what would it be?
Explain your answer.
7. Based on your new experimental set-up, what is now the role of sunlight?

Assessment

Directions: Read each item carefully. Choose the most appropriate answer to each question
below. Write the letter of your answer on your paper.

1. What characteristic or quantity is being manipulated or changed during scientific

investigations when performed under specific or varying situations?
A. variable
B. experiment
C. research design
D. all the above

2. What type of variable considered undesirable since it may cause errors in the result of an
experiment?
A. controlled variable
B. dependent variable
C. extraneous variable
D. independent variable

3. What variable is thought to be changed or also known as the responding variable?

A. controlled variable
B. dependent variable

D. independent variable

For questions 4-5, refer to the text below.

Leo has two fish aquariums. He noticed the growth of algae in the aquarium. While watching
YouTube, he found out that aquatic plants can alter the growth of algae in an aquarium. He
then made a science research. He filled one aquarium with aquatic plants and another
aquarium without aquatic plants. He recorded his observation and saw the effect of aquatic
plants in the growth of algae.

4. What is the dependent variable in Leo’s scientific investigation?

A. aquatic plants
