Weak Acid Titrated with a Strong Base

Strategy for calculating the pH

• Dissociate the strong base

NaOH(aq)  Na+(aq) + OH−(aq)
Na+ will be a spectator ion

• Set up a table for reaction of OH− and HA

• In table, use up either OH− or HA (use up the limiting

reagent)

• If OH− is limiting or at equivalence point, calculate

pH from equilibrium concentrations

• If HA is limiting, calculate pH from [OH−] in excess
