EMBANKMENT CONSTRUCTION WITH FLY ASH/POND ASH

1.0 Purpose

The purpose of this Method Statement for Construction of Embankment with Fly ash/Pond ash and
Cover the side with Borrow Area soil is to provide details of the Construction Method Statement,
Quality Control System, Procedures and Safety & Environment.

2.0 Scope
The Scope of this Method Statement covers the Construction of Embankment with approved
Material i.e. Fly ash/Pond ash and cover the side slopes with approved borrow area soil complete as
per MoRT&H Clause 305 , IRC SP 58 : 2001 and amendments therein including all leads and lifts.

3.0 Equipment
The following construction machineries will be deployed.

1. Dumper / trucks
2. Grader
3. Vibratory Roller
4. Water tanker
4.0 Procedure
4.1 Embankment Construction using Fly ash/Pond ash and Cover the sides with
Borrow Area Soil.

4.1.1 Material

The materials used in the works shall be Industrial Soil Confirming to IRC :SP -58: 2001 as fill
material and soil, moorum, gravel confirming to Clause 305.2.1 of MoRT&H Specifications (Fifth
revision) as fill material for side slopes covering.

The Industrial Material shall be sourced from nearby areas. The details shall be submitted to the
Engineer for approval. Samples shall be collected from the Stock pile tested jointly to check
suitability. The embankment material shall be incorporated in the works only after approval is
obtained from the Engineer.

4.1.2 Setting out Works:

The Centerline of the road will be set out by means of Total Station. The reference points for this
will be as per the project drawings.

The working Bench Marks will be established from the approved Reference Bench Marks at the rate
of four per Km and also at or near all drainage structures and got approved from the Engineer.

The reference points will be so located that these will not be disturbed during construction.

Reference pegs, marking the limits of embankment shall be fixed on both sides of the slopes. These
pegs are meant as guides and will be about 2.0m away from the toe of the embankment.

4.1.3 Preparation of Original/Natural ground for Embankment Construction

Atterberg’s limits, MDD, OMC, and in-situ dry density (FDD) of the material at ground level will be
determined. Any unsuitable material will be removed and replaced with suitable material. Suitable /
approved earth will be laid in layers not exceeding 250 mm compacted thickness and compacted to
specifications or as directed by the Engineer.

The natural ground, supporting embankment shall be leveled, scarified, mixed with water and
compacted to achieve 95% of lab density by 8-10 T vibratory roller with an approved pattern of
rolling.

Once the compaction of Original Ground Level is completed after Clearing and Grubbing operation,
joint level with the Engineer will be recorded for the purpose of measurement and preparation of
Cross Section and Longitudinal Section.

4.1.4 Embankment Construction Operation

Embankment shall be constructed as per the MoRT&H Specifications, Clause – 305 and IRC SP
58 :2001
a) The limits of Embankment will be marked by fixing batter pegs at regular intervals on both
sides of the Embankment layer and working line with white lime.

b) The Embankment will be built sufficiently wider than the designed dimensions so that after
proper compaction is achieved up to the toe of the embankment and surplus materials shall be
removed / trimmed to get the proper compacted slopes of embankment.

c) The Ground supporting embankment /sub grade shall be compacted as per guidelines given in
amended clause 305.3.4. When existing embankment is to be widened and its slopes are steeper
than 1 vertical on 2 horizontal, continuous horizontal benches each at least 300mm wide shall be
cut into the old slope for ensuring adequate bond with the fresh embankment to be added.

d) The Fly ash/Pond ash from approved Stock pile loaded onto tippers/tractor trailer with
hydraulic attachment for transportation to the approved stretch ready to receive Embankment
Material.

e) The Embankment material shall be spread in layer of uniform thickness not exceeding 250 mm
compacted thickness over the entire width of embankment by mechanical means, finished by motor
grader.

f) The natural moisture content of Slag will be found out and the balance amount of water to be
added to the Slag will be calculated as OMC minus NMC, so as to maintain moisture content from 2
% below to 1% above the OMC at the time of compaction.

g) The amount of water required for construction will be sprinkled from a water tanker
uniformly. After proper mixing and leveling with grader, the leveled layer of fill will be compacted
by vibratory road roller of 8-10 T capacity to achieve required density as 95% of Modified Proctor
Density. The numbers of passes and rolling pattern will be established by joint trial at site to ensure
the achievement of required degree of compaction.

5.0 Quality Control and Testing

Quality control tests shall be done as per Quality Control Tests and Acceptance Criteria of QAP.

6.0 Safety & Environment

While working Safety & Environment Procedure shall be followed as per approved EHS Manual.
Quality assurance and quality control

Quality Assurance & Quality Control of this work shall be as per Quality Assurance Manual and
corresponding Quality Assurance Plan. All quality records as appended to this procedure shall be
maintained in appropriate formats.
