INTRODUCTION

The ever-changing field of education has seen a tremendous increase in the use of
digital tools for instruction, communication, and teamwork as a result of the popularity of
online learning. Social media sites like Facebook have become crucial parts of
contemporary teaching methods among these tools. In particular, Facebook Messenger
has become more popular as a communication tool between teachers and students due to
its accessibility and user-friendly interface. Examining Facebook Messenger's influence
on the learning process is made possible by the fact that it is the primary tool used in
online education. Because of Messenger's broad use, accessibility, and real-time
communication features, many students and teachers prefer it over traditional learning
management systems like Google Classroom, which are made for structured educational
delivery. This Research goals are to investigate how Grade 11 Technical Vocational
Livelihood students at PHINMA-Cagayan de Oro College use Facebook Messenger for
academic communication, evaluate its effectiveness compared to traditional tools,
understand student preferences and challenges, examine its impact on academic
outcomes, and identify best practices for optimizing its use in education.
Background of the Study

In recent years, research has increasingly focused on the role of digital communication
tools in education, particularly platforms like Facebook Messenger. For instance, ( Smith
& Johnson, 2021) examined how real-time messaging impacts student engagement and
feedback in higher education. Their findings indicate that Facebook Messenger enhances
interaction and provides timely feedback, thereby improving learning experiences.
However, their focus on higher education highlights a gap regarding the effects of such
tools on high school students.

Doe et al. (2022) investigated the features of Facebook Messenger, such as group
chats and multimedia sharing, and their impact on cooperative learning and
student-teacher collaboration. Their mixed-methods study found that Messenger supports
a more interactive educational experience, yet the emphasis on higher education leaves a
significant gap in understanding its benefits for high school students.

Kirschner and Karpinski (2023) explored the effects of social networking sites on
academic performance, noting both advantages and distractions. Their research reveals
that while platforms like Facebook can enhance resource sharing and collaboration, they
also pose challenges, such as distraction and reduced study time. This complexity
suggests a need for more research into how these platforms function in high school
environments.

Independent Variable Dependent Variable

Figure 1

In this diagram, Facebook Messenger is the independent variable because it acts as

the main communication tool in online education at PHINMA Cagayan de Oro College.
This means it helps facilitate conversations between students and teachers, making it
easier to ask questions and share ideas. The dependent variables are student engagement,
academic performance, and overall learning experience. These are the outcomes we look
at to see how effective the use of Facebook Messenger is. For example, student
engagement refers to how actively students participate in discussions and activities, while
academic performance looks at their grades and understanding of the material. Overall
learning experience captures how satisfied and motivated students feel about their
education. So, the study aims to see how using Facebook Messenger impacts these
important aspects of learning.

This study employs two key theories to understand the impact of Facebook Messenger
on high school education: Transactional Distance Theory and Digital Interaction Theory.
Transactional Distance Theory, updated by Moore et al. (2020), focuses on the
psychological and communicative distance between learners and educators. It posits that
effective communication can reduce this distance, enhancing learning outcomes. In the
context of Facebook Messenger, the theory suggests that real-time messaging and
multimedia features foster more engaged interactions between students and teachers.

Statement of the Problem

This study explores the effects of using Facebook Messenger as the primary
communication tool for online education at PHINMA-Cagayan de Oro College. By
understanding its strengths, challenges, and overall influence on students' learning
experiences, this research aims to provide insights into how social media platforms like
Messenger shape the dynamics of online education. In particular, it will examine how
Messenger impacts communication efficiency, student engagement, academic
performance, and the overall quality of learning in comparison to other traditional
platforms.

To achieve the study’s aims, this research will explore:

1. How does the use of Facebook Messenger impact the efficiency of communication
between students and teachers in an online education setting?

2. In what ways does Facebook Messenger affect student engagement and participation in
online classes compared to traditional Learning Management System platforms?

3. What are the advantages and limitations of using Facebook Messenger as a tool for
online education, particularly in relation to academic performance and collaborative
learning?

Significance of the Study

This research explores the effects of using Facebook Messenger as the primary
communication tool for online education at PHINMA-Cagayan de Oro College. It helps
students see how Messenger influences their communication with friends and teachers,
which can either help or distract them from studying. For teachers, the study shows how
well Messenger works for class discussions and gives ideas on how to keep students
engaged while minimizing distractions. It also sets the stage for future research on social
media in education. Lastly, it helps the school community understand how Messenger
impacts learning, which can lead to better school policies.

Scope and Limitations

This study will focus on Grade 11 Technical-Vocational-Livelihood students at

PHINMA-Cagayan de Oro College, Max Suniel Street, Carmen, Cagayan de Oro City,
Misamis Oriental, Senior High School Campus during the 2024-2025 academic year. The
research will be conducted within the campus, specifically targeting students in the TVL
strand. The limitations of this study include its focus on Grade 11
Technical-Vocational-Livelihood students, a small sample size that may not represent all
students in PHINMA-Cagayan de Oro College Senior High School, potential biases in
self-reported data, and variations in access to resources, which could affect the
effectiveness of Facebook Messenger as a communication tool.
