INTRODUCTION
2
INTRODUCTION
❖Introduction to Embedded Systems.
❖Applications of Embedded Systems.
❖Typical subsystems in an Embedded Systems.
3
INTRODUCTION
❖Embedded systems?
❖Computers are embedded within other systems:
❖“Other Systems”?
❖Any computing systems other than desktop/laptop.
❖Typical Examples?
❖..
❖Processors are often very simple and inexpensive (depending on
applications).
4
COMMON FEATURES OF EMBEDDED SYSTEMS
❖They are single functions or special purpose.
❖Executes a single program, possible with input from the environment.
❖Constraints?
❖Low cost, low power, small size, relatively fast.
❖Must reacts to events in real-time.
❖Responds to inputs from the system environment.
❖Must compute certain results in real-time without delay (depends on the
application)
5
TYPICAL DESIGN CONSTRAINTS
❖Low cost
❖The cost of the embedded systems can be increased by the sophisticated
processor.
❖Low energy consumption
❖Many embedded systems operate on battery.
❖Limited memory
❖Typically constrained to a small amount of memory.
❖Real-time response
❖Must generate response within a specified time.
6
HOW TO DEFINE AN EMBEDDED SYSTEM?
❖It is a micro controller-based system that is designed to control a function or
range of functions, and is not meant to be programmed by end user.
❖The user may make choices concerning the functionality but can not
change them.
❖The user can not make modification to the software.
❖What is not an embedded system?
❖A microprocessor sitting inside a computing system. (Like desktop, laptop,
server, etc..).
❖Actually it is a microprocessor used to control another piece of technology
(dedicated and not general purpose).
❖For low cost microcontrollers that are typically used are single chip-devices
containing processor, memory, and i/o interfaces.
7
APPLICATIONS OF EMBEDDED SYSTEMS
❖Communications: Mobile phone, network switches, WiFi hotspots, telephones,
MODEM, etc.
❖Office Automation: Printers, scanners, biometric scanner, surveillance camera,
photo copying machines, fax machines, etc.
❖Consumer segment: Refrigerator , washing machine, A/C machine, microwave
oven, etc.
❖Automobiles: Anti-lock-braking system (ABS), Air bags, engine control, GPS
system, etc.
