Download and install
Multisim education
version (trial)
• Multisim Download – NI

• Use your student email to create an

account and log in.
Once you open Multisim, you can either use the
45 days trial version or the student version
Look at the pdf for more references on how to install the software.
Download the academic volume license
• Academic Volume License Download - NI

***Need to check
Think you need to be
connected to the
University network to
access multisim using
cs-host2 as host server.
Works for me when I
open Multisim at school 1
and then working at
home without closing
the software. 2

Resistors 1
• The most common
are ¼ watt resistors,
the footprint
depends on the
manufacturer.
2
• The ones we are
going to use are the:
IPC-2221A/RES1400-800x250

A physical component should be color blue.
A virtual component is going to be black.

• Ok

• The LM324 is a 4 OpAmp IC, (A,B,C,D)

Look for the datasheet of your components
(you can try to google the pinout, just be aware of
a possible variation between versions and other
manufacturers).

Place Power Source, GND
Place as much as you want, so your circuit
schematic looks cleaner. (at the end, each
terminal has its own net)

By default
VCC=5V
VEE=-5V

*** Tip1: You can press Ctrl+R to rotate

components.

***Tip 2: You can do right click to open the

options menu, and then click on “Place
Component” to open the Components
window, it also works with Ctrl+W.

In the next slide, you are going to find the ones

you probably have used before.
Agilent function generator
• Doble click on the icon to
open the graphic
instrument.

• The GND connection is

assumed by default.
Tektronix oscilloscope
(don’t forget to turn it on!!!)
• Doble click on the
icon to open the
graphic
instrument.

• The GND
connection is
assumed by
default.
Once you create your circuit.
• Click “Run” to start the simulation.
PS5.1
Using what you learned.
1) Imagine you have an EEG acquisition system, the output of this device is in the range from -1V to 1V, and
you want to amplify the signal to use it in an ADC with a range from -5 to 5 V. Consider that you need to
preserve the signal waveform and phase.
• Create a circuit in Multisim, use the components LM324N form TI and resistors with the required
footprint IPC-2221A/RES1400-800x250.
• Use the Agilent function generator to create a 1Vpp and 10 Hz Triangle signal to simulate the EEG
waveform from the device. Also, place the Tektronix oscilloscope to observe the output of your circuit.
• Take a Screenshot and upload it to the corresponding section: PS5-1.

PS5 1)
PS5.2
2) Create an Instrumentation amplifier using 25kꭥ resistors for the buffers and 40kꭥ resistors for the
differential part. (LM324N and IPC..RES...)
• Calculate the Transfer function of the circuit. (follow the general formula we cover in class), you
should get something in terms of Rg.
• Rg: Gain Resistor, is going to be calculated by you.
• Suppose you are about to acquire the ECG signal, but the amplitude of the signal varies from +-
2.5mV (use 1.5 Hz in your function generator). Using the Instrumentation Amplifier you have
created, amplify the signal to a max of +-2V.
• Finally, what do you need to add or modify to have the baseline at +2.5V?
• Take a Screenshot of the circuit and your calculations and upload it to the corresponding section:
PS5-2.
