ANALYSIS OF
STATICALLY INDTERMINATE
STRUCTURES
CHAPTER 6
INDETERMINATE STRUCTURES
This structures have more support reactions and/or
members than required for static stability. The equilibrium
equations alone are not sufficient for determining the
reactions and internal focers of such structures and must
be supplementes by additional relationships based on the
geometry of deformation of structures.
METHODS TO USE:
1. Slope-Deflection Method
2. Three-Moment Equation
3. Moment Distribution Method
I. SLOPE DEFLECTION METHOD

- beam member
- fixed end moment

Slope-Defelction Method Considerations:
• in fixed end support is zero.
• Moment ( ) at exterior hinged/roller support is zero.
• Counter-clockwise moment and rotation is positive.
Example 1:
From the given figure:
a. Determine the reaction in each support.
b. Draw the shear and moment diagram of the beam.

Example 2:
Determine the member end moments and reactions for the three-span
continous beam shown due to the uniformly distributed load and due to the
support settlements of 15 mm @ B, 36 mm @ C and 18 mm @ D. Use the
slope-deflection method given that E=200 GPa and I=1705x .
