Lesson 4 – Geometry I

Example 1

𝐴𝐵𝐶𝐷 is a square. 𝐸 and 𝐹 are points on 𝐵𝐶 and 𝐶𝐷, respectively. 𝐴𝐸, 𝐷𝐸, 𝐵𝐹 and 𝐴𝐹
divide the square into 8 regions of different areas. Show that 𝑆3 = 𝑆4 + 𝑆7 + 𝑆8 .

2. The figure shows a rhombus 𝐴𝐵𝐶𝐷. 𝑀 and 𝑁 are mid-points of 𝐴𝐷 and 𝐵𝐶,
respectively. Given that the area of 𝐴𝐵𝐶𝐷 is 800 𝑐𝑚2 , find the area of 𝐴𝑁𝐶𝑀.

3. 𝑃, 𝑄, 𝑅 and 𝑆 are midpoints of each side on rhombus 𝐴𝐵𝐶𝐷. Given that the area of
the shaded region is 24 𝑐𝑚2, find the area of 𝐴𝐵𝐶𝐷.

Example 2

3 circles of radii 1 cm, 2 cm, and 4 cm have their centres aligned. Find the ratio of the area
of the unshaded region to the area of the shaded region.

Practice

4. The figure comprises of a semi-circle and a parallelogram. Given that the diameter of
